Jeff Sessions is also one of the conservatives champions on the Hill, in the Senate caucus where we need all the help we can get. Mitch McConnell gets a lot of criticism here, and much of it is unfair. McConnell was a fearless Minority Leader. As a Majority Leader, he has led a caucus with about 40-45 reliable conservatives, rounded out by a bunch of moderates who are the swing vote. A lot of the criticism of McConnell comes from people who don't understand that to command even 51 votes, he has needed Susan Collins, Mark Kirk, Lisa Murkowski, Lindsey Graham, and John McCain on board. This does tend to tie his hands. And heading into next year, the margin will be even narrower. I'm sure the Democrats are already looking for the next Jim Jeffords.
Offering the nomination to Sessions was a mistake. For Sessions to accept it would be a mistake. There are times when a person is too important right where he is. There are plenty of people who would make a great AG.
Jim Jeffords = Lindsey Grahm
