Former Wisconsin congressman and defense secretary Melvin Laird has died at age 94, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Laird, a Marshfield native, was a decorated sailor in World War II, state senator, U.S. congressman and secretary of defense. He reached the pinnacle of his power as U.S. defense secretary for Richard Nixon in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Laird was also the driving force behind the Laird Center for Medical Research a $35 million facility at the Marshfield Clinic.
Melvin Laird ended the draft 4 months before I turned 18.
I remember his name and said his name many times reciting the chain of command on guard mount.
Mrs. Melvin Laird was the sponsor of my submarine.
Sometimes know as “Bombsaway Laird” if I remember correctly - by the anti-war thugs, of course - RIP.....
RIP.
Pretty sure he’s the genius that had the B-52s fly at 30,000 ft. via the same coordinates, same time every day.
Sitting ducks for the North.
(he didn’t want to give away the B-52 strategic profile to the Soviets)
