Melvin Laird ended the draft 4 months before I turned 18.
I remember his name and said his name many times reciting the chain of command on guard mount.
Mrs. Melvin Laird was the sponsor of my submarine.
Sometimes know as “Bombsaway Laird” if I remember correctly - by the anti-war thugs, of course - RIP.....
