Illegals demand Obama issue mass pardons amid Trump deportation fears
The Washington Times ^ | Tuesday, November 15, 2016 | Stephen Dinan

Illegal immigrants are preparing to ask President Obama to pardon some 750,000 Dreamers, saying such a move is their last, best hope to stave off what they fear will be a wave of deportations once Donald Trump takes the Oval Office.

Community leaders have planned a rally in New York on Wednesday to make the request.

“Millions of law abiding undocumented immigrants are fearful of what will happen when the new Administration takes control in January,” the group of New York state lawmakers and immigration advocates said in a statement announcing the rally. “However, President Obama has the power of pardons that he can use to protect all DACA enrollees.”

As of September, more than 740,000 illegal immigrants had been approved for Mr. Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, a minor amnesty that grants young adult illegal immigrants a two-year stay of deportation and issues them work permits, entitling them to driver’s licenses and some taxpayer benefits.

Mr. Trump has signaled that he would cancel that order, leaving Dreamers out of status when their work permits expire. That puts Mr. Obama in a bind because he has expressed an interest in helping illegal immigrants but also has acknowledged limits on power.

Mr. Obama ducked a question this week about what steps he might take and instead urged Mr. Trump to “think long and hard” before canceling the DACA program.

Can a President even pardon a whole group of people without naming them individually?

If they were “law abiding”, why would they need a pardon?

Doesn’t the Hussein administration brag about how many illegals are deported?

High deportation figures are misleading

Simple solution - impose Mexico’s own immigration laws on the illegals here. Arrest and deport them all. There is no such thing as a “law abiding undocumented immigrant”. The very act of crossing the border into the US without proper documentation makes them a law-breaker.

Carter pardoned the draft dodgers. I don’t know the particulars.

“...law abiding undocumented immigrants”

Someone should ask them why, if they're law-abiding, do they need a pardon?

A pardon won’t grant them citizenship or the right to live here.

Send them back with the same mules that brought them here.

Oh, but they were invited. BO’B, himself, invited them and The door was opened by co-conspirators.

I suggest, instead, that they self-deport before January 21st - thereby retaining at least some control over the process. :)

There are several examples of pardons without specific names in US history. Here’s one:

They also have to be named on the pardon - individually - to be pardoned. You don’t pardon a group or class. You pardon a person. “Person” is a legal term.

Do they need to be separately signed?

There’s apardon vetting process. Each pardon is handled on an individual basis, just like they had to do in VA.

I don’t know if you can put a few hundred thousand names on a single pardon or not.

I bring it up simply because it is another reason the concept is absurd. You can pardon someone for robbing a bank, but if they go out the very next day and rob a bank, they are not protected by that pardon. They’ll need another one.

i.e. even if Obama could pardon them all individually, the moment Trump becomes president the pardon is null and void IF they are still in the country illegally. It’s a fresh new crime, committed after the pardon was signed.

The whole thing is kinda like the “what of the electors for Trump vote for Hillary” meme. It’s ludicrous on the face of it.

Not correct. Andrew Johnson and Jimmy Carter come to mind. The definition of Presidential amnesty is pardon applied to a group of people not individually named.
