It's no more stupid than the FBI agents who informed the Branch Davidians — via loudspeaker — "you are not under attack," as they smashed through the walls of their compound and "inserted" tear gas canisters that set the whole place ablaze and killed more tnan seventy of them.
And — in a more directly MIT-oriented example — it's no more stupid than when the scientists who were in charge of some the large-scale hot-fusion research labs told Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons to their faces that they had screwed up their experimental technique, and had miscalculated the data that resulted, thereby slowing down but not stopping a very interesting line of research into a type of fusion that has almost nothing to do with plasmas as they exist in the Sun's core.
Great power gives those who have it what they think of as the right to be stupid. After all, it isn't necessary to ram something down someone's throat if it makes sense, is it? You only have to use force to get people to do things they don't want to do if those things make no sense to them, isn't that true?
Gruber is in the business of ramming things down people's throats. He thinks his educational background and position at what used to be one of the world's great educational institutions gives him the right to do that. He believes you have to lie to people to get them to do what they should want to do, which is basically to act against their own interests.
It's getting to where I cannot continue to read things like this from the Left. It gives me a headache trying to fathom the absolute lunacy of how they can make statements like this completely devoid of logic and outside any modicum of reality - this, Barbara Boxer's beyond clueless comments on the Electoral College (coupled with the fact she has been a member of the U.S. Senate which is just as "undemocratic" and the irony of this is lost on her), the article from the liberal commentator stating that any Supreme Court justice appointed by Trump should be "shunned" because they are "illegitimate" for no apparent reason, the petition stating that Obama should just by-pass the Senate and place Garland on the Supreme Court because the Senate somehow no longer has the authority of confirmation because McConnell will not bring the nominee to the floor, etc. Trying to understand how someone could work think this sort of stuff up and think it makes sense to present it - this absolute nonsense - really is causing me to get almost sick.

Back when I studied economics, people believed that adding to the cost of hiring would reduce the number of hires. We called the phenomenon “supply and demand”. Has that concept been proven false based on evidence or just based on liberal wishes?
These Libs come up with some of the zaniest ideas going and then they pat each other on the back and praise themselves.
‘They’ have been telling us for years to raise taxes to cover expenses with a slight ‘problem’.. they overspend 20 % and raise the taxes 18%....and don’t try to bring the debt down, just put the ‘new’ money somewhere else...
Like when you come home and find there was a sewer line break and your basement was ‘flooded’ with raw sewage and the level was rising.

These government spenders operating on OPM (read Mine & Yours) have been telling us jacking up the floor is the answer AND a good number of people have bought into it and as long as THEIR handouts keep coming in, they just don’t GAF what is going on across the hall.
