The Death Of The Democratic Party

Nov 9, 2016

By Glenn Greenwald, first posted on the Intercept

Democrats, Trump, and the Ongoing, Dangerous Refusal to Learn the Lesson of Brexit

The parallels between the U.K.’s shocking approval of the Brexit referendum in June and the U.S.’ even more shocking election of Donald Trump as president last night are overwhelming. Elites (outside of populist right-wing circles) aggressively unified across ideological lines in opposition to both. Supporters of Brexit and Trump were continually maligned by the dominant media narrative (validly or otherwise) as primitive, stupid, racist, xenophobic, and irrational. In each case, journalists who spend all day chatting with one another on Twitter and congregating in exclusive social circles in national capitals ? constantly re-affirming their own wisdom in an endless feedback loop ? were certain of victory. Afterward, the elites whose entitlement to prevail was crushed devoted their energies to blaming everyone they could find except for themselves, while doubling down on their unbridled contempt for those who defied them, steadfastly refusing to examine what drove their insubordination.

The indisputable fact is that prevailing institutions of authority in the West, for decades, have relentlessly and with complete indifference stomped on the economic welfare and social security of hundreds of millions of people. While elite circles gorged themselves on globalism, free trade, Wall Street casino gambling, and endless wars (wars that enriched the perpetrators and sent the poorest and most marginalized to bear all their burdens), they completely ignored the victims of their gluttony, except when those victims piped up a bit too much ? when they caused a ruckus ? and were then scornfully condemned as troglodytes who were the deserved losers in the glorious, global game of meritocracy.

It seems to me that the left broke with their classic class warfare, where the working class is their main focus, replaced by identity politics and militant environmentalism. They also embraced globalism, which also manifests itself in the form of unchecked immigration, in addition to outsourcing. I think this was a response to the fall of communism symbolized by the downfall of once mighty Soviet Union. The working class was abandoned and ended up joining the ranks of left's favorite bogeymen. Now it came back to haunt them.

Post-soviet framework is now severely challenged and they have to rethink their direction. I have a feeling that they will make an attempt to stop demonizing the working class. I don't know how well it will work. Their connection to the working class seems to be irreversibly damaged.

On a different note, would there be a serious soul-searching among GOP elites? So far I don't see any signs. I won't be surprised if they are more obstinate than Dems to recognize the change of time.

It’s a pity it had to rust nearly all the way through before the blue paint peeled away.

The unions were a bulwark against communism.

Workers only want to go so far left, e.g. unemployment insurance, social security, medicare, etc.

They're OK with liberalism, but despise leftism.

They want to work and get paid. They have no tolerance for ambitious environmentalism that threatens jobs, and all the gay marriage and tranny bathroom nonsense.

They also like to speak their mind, so safe spaces and hate speech and all the other precious snowflake stuff is anathema to them.

Ot dead. Justlost a major battle.

Never dead. Never over. No final batles. The fight is endless. We all gotta remember and not rest and think anything is evr over.

Purge just started in earnest. Gotta get the uniparty rino goper leadership out next. Mccamnesty, Grahamnesty, McConell, others. Thdy can go gracefully and with some dignity, or nt. Their choice.

But they are going to go. Whole,g-d point of all this. To take our party back.

We are not mexicans. We make the others leave, we dont leave our party, we dont leave our country, when things get tough and dangerous. We reclaim the party we reclaim the country, we make the adversaries leave.

Globalism is the pseudo-religion of the UniParty elites, as it is a means to a much greater and evil end. Just as Nigel Farage and UKIP achieved in Great Britain, Donald Trump has exposed the closeted Globalists who openly united against the one candidate who dared to be a nationalist. They will not go quietly, and great danger still lies ahead.

Not really. A major battle lost. But the war is far from over. In fact, I’d suggest, if anything, the Republican Party AS WE KNOW IT must die and be reborn outside of its destructive globalist, neo-con, politically correct pit.

Your post reminds me of George Meanie, who doesn’t get enough credit for running the hardcore Leftists out of the labor movement ... at least back in the day when the labor movement actually fought for the workers.

In CA, and I imagine other places in the nation, the Dems upped the contempt shown Repubs in otherwise neutral settings (e.g., company dinners, holiday parties etc.). They bragged on social media about the way in which they insulted party guests and peers in public for holding different political views (were they competing for Alinsky trophies?). They labored to unite the disparate terms “republican” and “bigot” into one epithet easily applied to silence anyone who had an opinion they didn’t want to exist. It never occurred to Dems that Republicans might just, oh I don’t know, not offer information to abusive people on demand??? So the polls and hence, Dem strategies were 100% over confident and wrong.
But, but, but,... they felt so GOOD reenacting exactly HOW they insulted family members and coworkers - sharing selfies and “delicious” put downs on Twitter! Oh boo, hoo, hoo, hoo, they cried - all the way to their basement bedrooms. THIS tantrum is going to leave a mark...on THEM.

It’s possible that Trump has done what no one would think possible, rescue the Republican Party from becoming the twenty first century Whigs by grafting onto it a sort of pro-labor, populist, street fighter branch. Of course it was the Democrats going whole hog Communist and loudly catering to the gender confused mentally ill that created a vacuum such a hybrid party could fill.

As I indicated, the resistance of party establishments could be stronger on our side.

It is fortunate that we had a candidate hated by 50% of population, when they had the one hated by 75% of population. Bernie bots, the half of Dem party, really hate Hildebeast.

We could tell party elites to go hell and imposed our will over them, but the Dems failed on that account. This made the difference in the election outcome. We made the change and they couldn't.

I can't believe how weird the labor movement has gotten. They used to be dead set against illegal aliens and now they support them ... I guess in hopes they will get amnesty and fill the decimated union ranks.

Also, I believe a huge chunk of union members are government employees who really shouldn't be unionized at all.

Those union members are definitely more in favor of all the leftist nonsense than typical assembly line workers, teamsters, etc.

The world turned upside down.

What makes this so bizarre is that the Democrat-Republican political landscape has turned completely upside down. The Democrat Party is now the party of globalist empire-builders and Wall Street banks, while the Republican Party — or at least the grassroots part of it — is the part of nationalism and the American working class.

Right you are.

But the GLOBALISTS and their media/political buttboys have been exposed. Who trusts a leivine, ericson, beck, will, rove, boosche, mccaine, gutfold, kelly, krauthamner, mcconnell, ryan, comey, and on and on and on?

There is no turning back, and the GLOBALIST plutocrats trying to enslave you and take over the world have many less tools in their belts.

Repub party elites want to be more like Dem establishment, while Dem grassroots want to be more like Repub grassroots. Yeah, it is something we never expected 10 years ago.
