Electoral college: What is it, how does it work and is it really the best system?
The Independent ^ | Wed, 11/09/16 | Harriet Agerholm

"And the system technically allows the electors to hijack the result, since it is not certain the electors will vote the way their state does.

Although around 30 of the 50 states have passed laws that mean their electors must vote according to the popular vote in their state – the punishment for not doing so is can merely be a fine. This means they could potentially defy the electorate's choice." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-elections/electoral-college-how-does-it-work-us-election-day-2016-states-votes-donald-trump-hilalry-clinton-a7404086.html

I think the phrase used by one of the Founding Fathers was along the lines of:

it avoids the tyranny of the majority...

best I got.

I guess there is no way to stop this in the future...? VA Governor is such a “friend” of the Clintons.

Another Governor might try it too! How many felons in CA? What a change that would make for them!

The reality is this wasn’t close via the EC.
It’s not like 2000 where ONE state decided it with less than 5000 votes. This time DT won by a few states. He didn’t even need Florida. Hows that?!

I was going to say the same thing. Those that want the electoral college done away with in favor of the popular vote need to amend the Constitution (good luck with that libs).

Also, the Constitution can also be ratified by an Article V Convention of the states. If you can get 38 states to call for a Constitutional Convention, then the state representatives can convene and vote on proposed constitutional amendments.

Those proposed amendments are then sent back to the states and if 38 state legislatures ratify the amendment(s), then those amendments become constitutional amendments independent of congress!

Like you said, the electoral college will NOT be eliminated anytime soon!!

What do they mean is this “best system”? It is the system, period, of the United States - the President of the United States is just that - the President of the UNITED STATES - and is elected by those STATES. That’s our system of government - individual entities that joined together to form this union. There is nothing official about a “national popular vote” - they are just tabulating together the results of completely separate elections that are not related to each other. These are individual separate local elections put in place by the individual state legislatures - they each individually decided to grant their citizens the right to choose the Electors of their individual states.

Math against Tyranny.

Looking at the county voting map should show anyone how unfair it would be to abolish the EC!

Fringes of the states and places where the WALL is really needed are obvious in that graphic.

It is bad enough that small areas of each state carry most of the elections.

Illegal aliens voting, felons voting, rigged touch screen voting machines flipping votes from Trump to Clinton, busloads of college kids and illegals going from polling place to polling place, cheaters registering in the names of deceased citizens and then voting using their names, etc.

No wonder her highness is leading in the popular vote.

Not only that, but the blue states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin not only flipping - but flipping all at the same time, is nothing short of a decisive victory - the first two had not been red states since 1988, and the third not since 1984. That’s just huge.

They should change one thing, do it by county instead of state.

Have you ever noticed it is almost universally the leftists who float this idea and support it?

If it were the other way around they would be singing how ingenious this system is...indeed, that’s exactly what they were saying in 2000 when suggesting Bush might win the popular vote but lose the election - I remember hearing Gore say that personally when asked what he thought about winning the election but losing the popular vote (which, in reality, doesn’t exist in any official capacity).

Yes, about Texas, and that 43% Dem vote down there.

Now, in NYS, I have a built in excuse. But Texas ?
