The agents listening to the recordings couldn’t tell from the conversations if what the suspect was describing was accurate, but it was, they thought, worth checking out.

The key word to this article is “recordings”. The FBI wants everyone to know they have secret recordings. The clintons likely knew but know EVERYONE knows.
