Aluminum ships now?Yes. They are aluminum above the waterline.

It sure as hell wasn’t the Russians. They wouldn’t have released them. They would have held them for blackmail.

Just over forty years ago Strick Corporation built 10,000 all welded aluminum forty foot ocean cargo containers for Zim Container Service. I had the duty on the West Coast of their maintenance, and repair.
As soon as was fiscally reasonable they switched their fleet to all steel corrugated.

Apparently not - the Missouri left a 12-foot gash in the side of Miraflores Lock 40-odd years ago.

Was never in the Navy (just a department of, USMC) but don’t think I would want to serve aboard a ship made of aluminum.
Just look at the new Ford F-100 pickup beds after the fall tests.

Theyre mechanized tugs. They just call them mules.Ummmm....
No.
They are electric mini-locomotives, running on RR type tracks alongside both sides of the canal.

They could always put a steel skin on it. Not very cost effective though..And knock its speed performance in half?
Seriously?
Obamorons. The Military leadership Obama got rid of, left the incompetent in charge.
F-35 and now the Navy?
I can't wait to see what the do to the army to muck IT up...

The manufacturer should be ashamed to put such a vessel to sea.
Ashamed. Interesting point.
If Hillary were president when these ships were launched--- and accepted, she would have blamed Dubya.
Trump had been demonized for failing to pay for work done by incompetent contractors or subcontractors.
Obama or Shrillary would just raise taxes and pay for the work twice...

Call them what you will. I call your “electric mini-locomotives, running on RR type tracks alongside both sides of the canal” “mechanized tugs”. Not only do I understand what I’m talking about, the poster I responded to also understood what I was talking about, so you needn’t lose any sleep over this. I most certainly won’t.

Also, speed limit in the locks is 3 kts. This isnt a supertanker. Sounds like the rudder got stuck hard over or something.Irrelevant.
when pulled by "mules" the rudder plays no role whatsoever...

I was leery of allowing women in the Navy. Now it appears theyre letting them pilot the ships. I believe that ships transiting the the locks are towed through by small traction engines. I'm not sure if they may also get canal personnel as pilots.
