What did we expect? A nation that dresses girls and fairies like soldiers and pretends they can fight now parades them around in delicate warships. And we are picking new fights. This will not end well.

According to the link, a Panama Canal Pilot was at the controls when the collision took place.

There is an 18 inch crack where the transom plate joins the port quarter plate, so, I guess the rear end must have swung wide.

Then, there is this astounding quote:

“The USS Montgomery is small enough to fit into the Panama Canal’s old locks, which use mules...to make the transit.”

I was not ready for that!

They’re mechanized tugs. They just call them mules.

Any excuse to get stuck at port for repairs until Trump is in office would work for me.

It’s amazing how much money America has to spend to learn a lesson.

As an old welder, I have to say:

SHI++Y welding! For plates to crack is inexcusable. The welding should be so excellent on a warship that the metal would bend to its yield point like taffy before a weld would crack.

The manufacturer should be ashamed to put such a vessel to sea.
Ashamed.

The “mules” are electrical winching machines that move on tracks along with the ship, keeping a steady tension on steel cables.

A pair of "mules" are visible on the wall even with the stern of the ship.

My home-made welded-steel boat is alongside the tug.

Like, over tge top of the aluminum?

Disimilar metals touching oxidize. Running into that with my car’s aluminum hood, contamination of metal particles before the coatings and paint were applied.

.....and as a former working administrator of maintenance, and repair for containership operations with more than a tad bit of experience in such matters I agree totally with your assessment.

Talk about oxidation, if that thing is made of aluminum it will just dissolve in salt water. All it takes is a scratch. Maybe it’s some kind of unobtanium metal.
