Of course the electorate was different back in 1980. Today we have more 3rd world immigrants for example. In 1980, CA went for Reagan. That’s unlikely to happen this year.
The reason for the flip to show dim states as blue is that red historically has been associated with radicals and communism.
Media couldn't have that imagery so they flipped them.
Heard pat express those feelings last nite.
He’s “been there, done that”
I agree...gosh this is so nerve wracking! Polls are all over the place..I just hope and pray emailgate will bring the witch from hell down!!!
I had bought my first VCR that day, and when I finally got it hooked up and turned on TV, first sight was a sea of blue behind John Chancellor
One of the most exciting moments of my life
I still have that tape somewhere
They all went red at the same time including Fox. We should demand a network let us be blue again. It was such a media coordinated sham.
Yes, there is no denying that the electorate is demographically quite different than it was in 1980. And, there is no denying that the education system is churning out a greater proportion of, not to be harsh, very ignorant young voters.
However, there is a big factor, on the other side of the equation, that doesn’t get mentioned enough. Back in 1980, the democrat party was *nothing* like the democrat party of today. There were still responsible, patriotic, and generally good people throughout the party. The party never would have gone for a fraction of the truly bizarre and outlandish things that now make up their mainstream platform. In other words, a good, decent, common-sense citizen could still vote democrat, and not be a complete idiot, or a completely selfish person.
There is a much greater pool of potential “Reagan voters” out there, because the political process is so much more broken than it was back then. And yes, that pool of potential “Reagan voters” can include people who were not born here.
The question, ultimately, is this: which is a greater force — the demographic changes, or the vacuum created by the massive shift leftward on the part of both parties? I don’t know, but suspect we will find out in the next week.
Shepard Smith breathlessly reported it was Hillary up 11 in Indiana, until his guest pointed out they had it reversed.
Maybe the dems would waste their time and money in CA and NY.
In all of politics, the one place I’d have liked to have been was on AIR FORCE ONE that Monday night flying back to DC when Pat told Jimmuh it was over, they had no chance. I’d have paid all I had at the time to have watched PEANUT BRAIN react.
Yeah thats why this talk of a Trump landslide is silly.
Something like 15-20% less white voters now, its mathematically impossible for ANY GOP nominee to win a true landslide now. We can do those at the state level and in midterms. But 300 EV’s is do-able and would be pretty sweet.
We need to work, vote & pray. Nothing for granted.
I remember 1980 but from my own vantage point it feels like 1996. That was the year of the militias and widespread training. President Mr Bill with his Democrat Congress were throwing off blazing signals that they intended to end the private possession of guns. Gun sales went through the roof and gun prices skyrocketed because the factories could not ramp up production fast enough. Then came the election itself. The Republicans swept Congress and the prices went down to old normal within a couple of weeks. There was a lot of angst there. Many many people thought we were at the point of armed resistance to tyranny. Election day brought a mass sigh of relief that could almost be heard through the neighborhood.
I was at early voting Saturday afternoon, in Greenwood Indiana.
90 plus minutes in line and when I left the line was longer!
It's a Conservative area but the Trump signs have been cut down and replaced several times. Today the line was still over 90 minutes long!
We are not a "bell weather" state, just my report, my experience so far.
It got successfully flipped because most conservatives instantly accepted the PC change as conservatives tend to do.
I was in a big store today in PA and the three clerks were talking back and forth between two registers and it was about their health insurance premiums going up and they were incensed. Thu was a man and two women talking and they were over age thirty. The guy was saying, I’m already working two jobs, I don’t know what I’m going to do. The women were knocking Hillary and they didn’t like the VP guy either. They didn’t seem to know Kaine’s name but they didn’t like Hillary’s VP guy. These are Caucasian union workers who work hard and are very vocal about how upset they are and they’re watching the news about her emails and they said to the effect, good it’s coming out because they don’t want her in office, not after eight years of Obama.

I know every time I see that red-blue map, it annoys and irritates me. I used to wonder why the GOP just accepted that switch. I don’t wonder about it now.
Got my monthly haircut today. My barber asked who I’m voting for. I said Trump, and he was happy because he was for Trump, too.
All the barbers were for Trump! Not old guys, all young Russian guys from Brooklyn.
Lots of anecdotal evidence that something is happening out there.
#MAGA
I am looking forward to it being Morning in America again.
They used to alternate between red and blue, and many years ago I remember networks having opposite color schemes in the same election year.
The 2000 election changed that, because the red/blue color scheme for that election stayed undecided for many weeks after Election Day and was a regular feature on nightly news reports. People just got used to it, so the networks kept it that way.
