Stephanie Kirchgaessner and Angela Giuffrida report that while it is clear that structures sustained major damage, it is too early to tell whether the latest disaster caused major injuries or fatalities:
It all came down, now there is no more town, said the mayor of Arquata del Tronto, Aleandro Petrucci. But, he added, there were already red zones in place that had been abandoned after the previous quakes.
The few people who remained have gone out to the streets, and are embracing. Now were going around to see what happened, he said.
Cesare Spuri, the head of Civil Protection in Marche, said: There are collapses everywhere. We report collapses in Muccia, Tolentino and in the areas surrounding Macerata, were trying to establish if people are underneath the rubble. There was also a strong shock in Ancona.
In Rome, the quake caused far more concern than Wednesdays earthquakes as they were felt much more strongly and for a longer period. The metro in the city has been closed while safety checks are conducted.

Prayers for those affected.
Around 7:40 AM, a powerful earthquake struck close to Norcia. The monks are all safe, but our hearts go immediately to those affected, and the priests of the monastery are searching for any who may need the Last Rites.
The Basilica of St. Benedict, the historic church built atop the birthplace of St. Benedict, was flattened by this most recent quake. May this image serve to illustrate the power of this earthquake, and the urgency we monks feel to seek out those who need the Sacraments on this difficult day for Italy.
Relying, as ever, on your prayers and support,
Fr. Benedict

Wow, Thanx for posting that.
You’re welcome. :)
We had a 2.2 in the West Country (Cornwall)at about the same time, I suspect the two events are related.
An edifice that stood for centuries is brought down in an instant by an earthquake. So sad.
Is this a new quake? Wasn’t there a strong aftershock middle of last week?
This is new and different?

While no fatalities were reported one man reportedly died from a heart attack that was possibility related to the shock locals were on Thursday carrying out a grim assessment of major damage to homes and churches in towns across Marche and parts of Umbria. The two regions were also hit in the 24 August quake that killed 300 people. ..."

It was centred near Norica - tremors felt as far afield as Rome - and is worst to hit the country since 1980 as early reports say around 10 people have been injured, one seriously.
A huge earthquake measuring 6.6 magnitude has struck in central Italy this morning at around 7.40am (6.40am UK time).
The quake was centred near Norica - which dates back to around 1200 AD and has a population of around 5,000 - 68km (42 miles) southeast of Perugia.
It comes just week after tremors in the region killed more than 300 people.
Early reports put the number of people injured at around 10 - with at least one of them reported to be serious.
The Basilica in Norica has been flattened - in one video nuns can be seen fleeing the scene before a clock tower which stood for hundreds of years collapsed.
This earthquake was around 108 km (67m) deep - and reportedly felt as far away as Rome (130km away) and over the border in Croatia and Slovenia.
There are reports that cracks have appeared on St Paul's Basilica in the capital - forcing it to be closed to the public while the building is assessed.
The Metro underground train service in Rome also been closed while it is checked over.
Nuns run from collapsing buildings and clock tower in aftermath
Nuns ran for their lives as buildings crumbled
Residents living in and around Norica, which is surrounded by dozens of towns, are reporting having been woken up by buildings shaking - and the sound of falling rocks.
Italian newspaper La Stampa is reporting that three people have been pulled alive from rubble in Tolentino - a town of around 20,000 people where several buildings have been said to have collapsed.
Emergency services are urging people to use SMS messages and WhatsApp to check on their friends and families - to avoid blocking emergency calls on mobile and phone landlines.

Seems you also had a small 2-point something on Thurs, Oct, 27th, when Italy had their other strong quake (6.1).
Perhaps God is sending the Pope a message. Look up!
This is just tragic. Not much mention I n news on tv. Prayers for people there and recover efforts.
