Lost a key?
Step 1: Remove doorknob to access, remove and replace latch/lock mechanism.
If you can’t get the knob off with this “gentle” approach, I’d suggest a pipe wrench to just twist the thing off.
....easy way or the hard way, take your pick.

Do you mean just turn it hard with a wrench and it will break off?
I’m not sure of your other method.
