Oh - I do get that part (and goodness, I most certainly hate to think what garbage could be waiting to burn a house down when you buy it if done without proper inspections) - in fact, the parsonage we use to live in had a LOT of unqualified “handyman” work done - mostly from former pastors as well as church member hoping to save a few $$$ - was a disaster waiting to happen.

But in my experience, the bulk of permit requirements and inspections are nothing more than a small revenue stream for municipalities, along with an excuse for the local politicians to hook up their family/friends to be inspectors.

I appreciate the acknowledgement of part of the permit process being good, but I have a pretty good idea you’re right here too.
