Most English language Bible translations do say "You shall not kill". Numerous scholars of Hebrew and Greek assert that these languages have multiple words for "end the life of a living thing", and that the word used in Exodus and Deuteronomy means "unlawfully end the life of a living human being". In English, that would be "murder" not the more generic "kill".

Silly question for semantics, but then you can’t “murder” an animal. Just kill it, I would assume?
