In the VIP section of what the Republican party planned as an election night celebration in 2012, big donors including Paul Singer and Joe Ricketts watched the votes trickle in to determine whether Mitt Romney would unseat Barack Obama as US president.A lesser known pair at the event hedge fund manager Bob Mercer and his daughter Rebekah had high hopes but it soon became clear Mr Romney was losing. When Fox News called Ohio for Mr Obama, top Romney operatives still insisted they had a chance. Republican strategist Karl Rove disputed the Ohio call on Fox in vain.
That was a moment of clarity for Rebekah Mercer, said a person close to the family and to Donald Trumps 2016 presidential campaign. That night, he said, she realised that the cottage industry of consultants, donors and members of the media were all phoney.
Theyve [squandered] $600m, $700m and we have nothing to show for it. She looked around, and she thought they were all fools, the whole lot of them.
It was then that Ms Mercer decided that she and her family would no longer write cheques and just sit back: she wanted accountability. Feeling that the familys political contributions had been mismanaged, the friend said, she started ramping up investments in things that she thinks puts lead on the target.
Rebekah Mercer sounds like one smart lady - let's keep a screen name reserved for her at FR - she speaks our language, as a friend described her: "She thinks people arent fighting hard enough. She wants to burn it.
And who knows, maybe a spot in the Trump cabinet?
Every quote from Rebeka Mercer is so good I hated to excerpt the article:
As other Republicans distanced themselves, Ms Mercer and her father issued a fiery statement in support.
America is finally fed up and disgusted with its political elite, they said. Trump is channelling this disgust, and those among the political elite who quake before the boombox of media blather do not appreciate the apocalyptic choice that America faces on November 8th. We have a country to save and there is only one person who can save it.
Shout it from the rooftops!!!!
Good on her
So the elites are not all as stupid as Ryan, Boehner, and McConnell?
The Republican Elites need to realize if they blow this election the chances of a third party have grown exponentially. Republicans had a good chance to capture Virginia in the last gubernatorial election but failed to back Cuccinelli because he was too conservative. Who needs dirty tricks when they bring defeat on themselves?
