"An executive order was issued Thursday, October 14, that outlined the countrys contingency plan in the event such weather events lead to significant disruption to systems like the electrical power grid, satellite operations or aviation."

An EMP can be manifested from a ground burst, but the lower it is the smaller its range. See you just explained exactly why EMP paranoia is stupid, not only is nobody getting a nuke that high up, it won’t be effective.
What you fail to realize is that EMP is actually NOT a desired strategy by any of our enemies that can use it. Anybody who has nukes wants to do the damage with the ACTUAL NUKE, not some EMP field that won’t be nearly as big or exciting as the paranoids like to insist.
Small warheads at high altitudes will have their EMP effect weakened thus making the entire attack pointless, NK will go low altitude and actually damage us with primary and secondary nuclear blast effects.
It is 100% a made up thing. Pure paranoid gibberish that completely fails on bothering to examine it.
Getting ready to drop an EMP on us - render us dead in the water??? (guess I get some copper screening)
They ARE that evil
An EMP during any initial nuclear Salvo was actually part of the Soviet strategy.
Maybe ours too, it is reasonable to surmise.
The EMP from a ground blast is localized as is the blast itself.
You seem to be taking the position that an EMP is possible, but nobody would use it. Iran, N Korea have both discussed it. Military around the world prepare and shield against it. It’s being prepared for by civil infrastructure providers at various levels of interest.
So your position is not widely shared.
I’m with you.
It was an acknowledged source of damage, it wasn’t really part of their strategy. The USSR understood they would ALSO get some benefit from it.
The paranoid fools always obsess on the “one nuke 300 miles up” thing. That’s the one I mock the hardest because it’s just plain STUPID. As you already admitted. As for lower altitude then the real problem is the nuclear blast itself. Between the fireball, the blast wave and the fallout EMP is so far down the threat scale to be utterly pointless. The military’s job is to prepare for everything, after all they’re expected to keep fighting even after the country has been nuked out of existence.
Actually my position is widely shared. Most of the world realizes the whole thing is silly, which is why even though people have been insisting this is a massive threat for 50+ years only some civil infrastructure has even bothered with it. Even during the highly paranoid days of having kids in school duck and cover constantly they weren’t prepping for EMP, even though they knew it existed. It’s quite simply not that big a deal.
Ok friend. We will agree to disagree on most everything else, while agreeing that an EMP is actually a documented phenomena
I never said it wasn’t a phenomena. I said it wasn’t a threat, not compared with everything else the weapons that make them do. 90% of the people in range of the EMP will be too dead to find out their electronics don’t work anymore.
There are reports before congress on the effects of EMP: http://www.empcommission.org/docs/empc_exec_rpt.pdf
Search by "EMP Congressional reports", and you will find a lot more.
Many years ago I taught chemical/biological/nuclear warfare survival, so, while not an expert, I have some idea.
In the cold war era, ham radio operators in the UK protect some, or all of their equipment by storing it in metal containers with insulating material between the equipment and the container.
This is cheap and easy to do.
Old ammo cans, metal garbage pails with metal lids, etc.
The insulation can be cardboard, newspapers, plastic, rubber, etc.
I protect some of my ham equipment that way right now.
You’re being obstinate.
There are a lot of reasons a rogue country like Iran or N Korea would opt for an EMP.
1. You don’t need to be very accurate with an EMP, you don’t need to even be within a few hundred miles of the intended detonation point to cause widespread damage to the US
2. An EMP is not very sensitive to the yield of the weapon. A 10kt weapon targeted with poor accuracy is not likely to hurt the target much if at all as a ground burst (they’ll certainly miss. They’ll hit something, to be sure)
3. Contrary to your assertion, EMP was Soviet doctrine. We know that. Why? It disrupts communications, either by killing the device, or disrupting the path of the communications.
4. It’s the most “bang” for their buck. Combined with coordinated actions in the aftermath, a lot of pain could be caused to an adversary.
5. A 10kt device will not destroy a city. If it’s on a truck it will destroy a few square blocks. They have little chance of doing that successfully.
Maybe a few with a sunburn or blinded nearby.
It would be an air burst quite high up.
A few years ago, the European media was laughing at Iran, as every one of the missiles they were testing were detonating at about 500 KM high.
Perfect for an wide area EMP.
One launched off either of our coasts from a container ship, and we're in the stone age.
That is surely what is in mind. He doesn’t want to admit of the possibility of EMP. It would be interesting if he is actually doing something rational and for the safety of the United States. However that is only one shoe dropping with that.
More plausible denial options being put out.
What a shame. </sarcasm>
Then we have to use paper and pencil ballots and may actually get an honest count.
George Soros will not be happy with all the money he invested in US voting machines.
Thanks, especially from an RF guy
There are some counties in Ohio that have only electronic voting and there is no paper back up.
Thanks, especially from an RF guy
Wow! Someone in the white house finally realized the sun controls all, especially weather.
Then in the senerio presented, those counties wouldn't be voting.
And since a federal court order is electronically filed these days, no federal court to interfere with the state's franchise...a court order MUST be filed to be official.
i guess that means that George Soros still can't pull off election fraud.
Transformers ARE NOT subject to destruction from EMP events. Only solid state devices are affected.
“Maybe”
Overvoltages can short out windings of transformers with carbonized arcs.
