Russian border patrol agents were forced to open fire after attempting to stop a fishing vessel with North Korean crew on board for inspection.
But the crew resisted, according to the Russian Federal Security Service.
One Russian officer and nine North Korean fishermen were injured in the stand-off.
One of the injured fishermen later died in the hospital.
The incident happened late on Friday evening according to the FSB statement, released online today.
A statement read: "During the search and control activities, guards found illegally-obtained water bio resources on board the vessel.
"The ships crew behaved aggressively towards members of the search group, refusing to comply with legal requirements."

Holy Smokes North Korea. That there is scary stuff.
Can’t wait for o dorkface to defend north korea.
Hey, don’t get off topic. We have Trump’s dirty words to talk about.
Global? Does NK have any allies at all?
Them versus Russia?
Works for me!
That quote from hunt for red October is the first thing that popped into my head.
It would be a better world if the US and Russia jointly put an end to this global menace.
Just the ones buying their nuke and rocket technology.
The Russians figure that their heartland in Western Russia is out of range of Korea’s missiles. Meanwhile, the Russians can turn North Korea into a wasteland (or at least more of a wasteland than it already is) with a tiny fraction of their nuclear arsenal.
The NORKS will now target Russia along with the US.
...guards found illegally-obtained water bio resources on board the vessel.
I think this means they went over the catch limit for fish.
The FSB probably isn't the best audience for fishing boat crews hell-bent on displaying their aggression and non-compliance skills.
Mr. niteowl77
China is not going to like that move.
It would take Russia a whole hour to turn NK into glass.
Russia versus China. Works for me!
