From what I have read, many executions by hanging were “county fair” type events, which, IMHO, they should be. If the gummint is killing someone, in my name, I probably should witness the event.
I remember reading that the Booth conspirators were hanged in private and thinking that was rather odd. I mean, if what gummint is doing is appropriate, it seems to me it should be done in the open, in broad daylight.
A careless shepherd once would keep
The flocks by moonlight there,
And high amongst the glimmering sheep
The dead man stood on air.
They hang us now in Shrewsbury jail:
The whistles blow forlorn,
And trains all night groan on the rail
To men that die at morn.
- A.E. Housman, "A Shropshire Lad"
The Booth conspirators were hanged on at Fort McNair in Washington D.C.
There were pictures taken of the event.
There was also some doubt as to their guilt, especially Mary Surratt, the boarding house owner......but the public wanted blood...................

People these days don’t realize their hamburger comes from cuddly cute cows... Hanging someone publicly would destroy all these disconnected little snowflakes.
We are so disconnected from Nature itself no wonder most of the populace is so disconnected from the dangers of barbarians at the gate...
