September US auto sales slide even as discounts rise

Major automakers posted lower September U.S. sales on Monday despite big consumer discounts, as pickup truck volumes fell for both General Motors and Ford.

With the top six U.S. market leaders reporting, deliveries fell 0.6 percent from a year earlier. But sales were still strong at 17.8 million vehicles on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis, Bill Fay, head of the Toyota brand in the U.S. market, told reporters on a conference call.

GM, the top-seller in the United States, posted a 0.6 percent decline. Ford reported an 8 percent drop, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was down 1 percent.

Shares of the three Detroit automakers rose, led by GM with a 1.1 percent gain.

I will never buy another UAW assembled vehicle.

They can have the government steal my money for them, but I will not voluntarily give them a dime.

Seems like a fairly insignificant drop overall. With lower gas prices, people may be holding on to their older cars longer than they normally might.

If they would bring back a good line of compact personal pick ups, sales would gain some strength.

I know. I’d love to have a small size pickup. You can’t find them anymore.

The US auto industry has to be the absolute WORST in market forecasting. This is a big part of why they are always going bankrupt. It started in the 70s when people wanted smaller cars and they were still making behemoth pimp-mobiles.

< shrug > My vehicles are both more than 10 years old, and both in good operating condition.

I can't think of a good reason to replace them.

About a year or so ago, Ford was talking about bringing back the Ranger & Bronco.

I just read where Ford will be using the abandoned small car plants to build both the Ranger and Bronco. Can’t remember where I read it but it makes sense.

Someone offered to buy my 15 year old Ranger today outside my dentist office.

I think Chevy makes the cheapest small PU, but I’d probably pay more and get a Toyota Tacoma.

They’re talking about plants that were closed to move production to Mexico.
Just guessing, but those are probably vehicles they don’t make a lot of money on, but due to CAFE standards, they won’t drop them altogether.

You’d be shocked what old late 80’s to early 90’s Toyota Extracab pickups are being bought for, so long as they’re 4x4 with the bullet-proof 22R 4 cylinder. If they’re no rust, excellent condition, low miles, $12K on up. People are starting to restore them, too.

Ford building trucks and SUVs in small-car plants was part of a deal with the UAW several years ago.

That Torino is nice and the retro look on the Bronco is beautiful.

It was just talk so far with no show. Even jeep isn't smart enough to figure out that a Willies style 4x4 would sell gang buster or Ford, which produced the Willies/Ford M-141 4x4, would end up owning the market.
