White Christian man, earned doctorate (Harvard!), well-read—voting for Donald Trump, who was my FIRST choice in the primaries!!!!

Not only do I have to put up with “how can an educated, intelligent person vote for Trump”, but in some cases “how can a good Christian vote for Trump”. I think that both points of view are based on false premises.

The “”intelligentsia” and the sources they use to inform themselves (e.g., the once-great, but now worthless New York Times) are simply not used to anyone like Donald Trump. Their reaction to him are a lot like the reaction of the intelligentsia to Ronald Reagan in 1980, and for pretty much the same reason.

“How can a good Christian vote for [any flawed candidate]” is a perennial question.

They might want to hold out for the next St. Francis or Mother Teresa, but like as not, such rare persons probably aren’t going to even care about politics. They may care about issues, but they’ll be quite innocent of politics.

It’s a matter of getting closer to where we want to be than we were before, not a matter of getting a flawless execution.
