My colleagues make fun of my old-fashioned devotion to my mailbox.
Its about 30 feet from my desk among all the other third-floor employees mailboxes and I check it constantly, always hoping a tipster will have sent me some revealing letter or secret document.
In Metro, we get a lot of junk mail, and are regularly flooded with correspondence from prisoners in New Yorks penitentiaries.
But Friday, Sept. 23, was different.
I walked to my mailbox and spotted a manila envelope, postmarked New York, NY, with a return address of The Trump Organization. My heart skipped a beat.
I have been on the hunt for Donald J. Trumps tax returns. The Republican presidential nominee has broken with decades-long tradition and refused to make his returns public. I have written extensively about Mr. Trumps finances, but, like almost every other reporter, I was eager to see his actual returns.
The envelope looked legitimate. I opened it, anxiously, and was astonished.

Short version: I don't think Trump's former accountant would have validated the authenticity of the returns without Trump's permission.
And, the reporter received the envelope about two weeks after the NY Times executive editor said he would risk jail to publish Trump's returns.
The New York Times Paid No Taxes in 2014

The democrats are focusing on the only issue no one cares about
Over 50% of the people in this country haven’t got a clue what tax returns are. They’ve never paid taxes. I don’t know what the big deal is.
They’re outright lying.
Probably someone in Obama’s IRS passed it to them - illegally.
“Finding an envelope in the mailbox, right in the middle of an election” is just a cover.
Fortunately for us, the cover-up is always worse than the crime. Slimes and their so-called credibility are going down big-time.
The author is lying and your analysis makes no sense.
If IRS leaked them, like they did Romney’s, that should be an interesting series of stories. If anyone is interested.
If Clintons shelter most of their income in a fraudulent foundation, that might also be an interesting series of stories, if anyone was interested.
The author might be lying about how she got it.
But, why would Trump's retired accountant authenticate the documents, if they are bogus?
And, why would Trump's accountant violate his professional code of conduct by offering an authentication?
Could the NY Times and the rest of Hillary’s minions do the unthinkable and actually cause sympathy for Trump??
They are really overplaying their hand here.
If I were him, I would spin it as, “if the political elite can do this to me with all my resources, just think what they are capable of doing to you”.
I too think that Trump himself sent this to the NYT, and it is hilarious as well. Nothing illegal is going on here and notice the return address is Trumps address...Bless him he is always 6 steps ahead of the media pack.
It keeps them from having to acknowledge all of the Clinton’s corruption and crass behavior.
Never, in the history of filling out envelopes, has someone put a fake address as the return address.
Gotcha.
Why would the federal IRS even have copies of Trump's NY, CT, and NJ state returns? You don't attach your state return to the federal return -- because your state tax withholding is on your W-2.
If you subsequently get a state tax refund, that is income in the year that it is received, and the state will provide a 1099-G.
Some states require your a copy of your federal return to be attached.
The Clinton Foundation is tax EXEMPT and running with a 94% overhead.
The 6% pays for diluted AIDS drugs for Africans.
(glass houses)
Yeah, I thought that was funny.
If someone truly wanted to remain anonymous, there would have been no return address.
The return address was to be sure someone took the bait, and didn't toss it in with the rest of the "crank mail".
If I were him, I would spin it as, if the political elite can do this to me with all my resources, just think what they are capable of doing to you.
Great point. So the powers don’t like what I post on the FR site. Let’s get that bastard and teach him a lesson they might say. Only problem is that my tax return would be so mundane it wouldn’t have any meaning except to quantify me with millions of other middle class retirees with part time jobs.
I agree. The author is a liar of major proportions and The Donald wouldn’t have done that. He’s private about his business decisions.
On the other hand, who cares? He’s been completely honest about his business life and that he’s used the law to his advantage - I only wish my husband and I had done that before we ran afoul of the IRS and New York State. Both are evil entities.
This is a re-run of the lies about Romney only in speed-time.
Her ten minutes of fame.
It doesn’t matter if you owe tax or not. You still have to file a return.
Don’t worry Comey and Lynch will be arresting this reporter soon for unauthorized release
