CNN Hypocrisy: Flashback to When Holier-Than-Thou Network Fat-Shamed Miss Universe Alicia Machado

Donald Trump is being assailed in the media for disparaging comments he made about Alicia Machado, the Venezuelan winner of the 1996 “Miss Universe” competition.

Machado claims that Trump, who ran the Miss Universe pageant, called her “Miss Piggy” after she gained weight. Trump himself said earlier this week that Machado “gained a massive amount of weight and it was a real problem.”

So let’s take a look back to the late 1990s, when the Miss Universe organization put Machado on a strict diet and exercise regime, and media outlets flocked to film her working out in a New York City gym. In fact, the media’s coverage of the spectacle was every bit as “fat-shaming” as Trump’s remarks.

CNN, for example, would be aggressively denounced today for what the news network wrote about Machado in 1997.

“When Alicia Machado of Venezuela was named Miss Universe nine months ago, no one could accuse her of being the size of the universe,” wrote legendary CNN correspondent Jeanne Moos. “But as her universe expanded, so did she, putting on nearly 60 pounds.”

...

Some have noticed another interesting aspect of this story, which blew up after Hillary Clinton very deliberately mentioned Machado at the end of the presidential debate on Monday. As it turns out, sympathetic mainstream media outlets had been working on profiles of Machado since last week, causing some to wonder if the press was coordinating all along with the Clinton campaign.

Of course, it was a setup by Hillary and her flying monkeys.

But seriously, Miss Universe, fashion, models, Hollywood actresses - putting on 60 lbs is not going to be a problem? It would be for guys in similar jobs too.

Surely it was a coincidence that all those media outlets just happened to interest themselves in an obscure ex-beauty queen with perhaps a not so savory past.

Yeah, but Trump is a Republican running for president, and the media is out to destroy him.

Jeanne Moos, the moron who asked then President George H.W. Bush if allegations that he had an extra-marital affair were true. She asked this during an official press conference Bush was holding with the foreign leader from another country. Can't remember who it was, but I recall seeing it, and couldn't believe that she'd ask that type of question at an official news conference. The foreign leader couldn't believe she asked that question either. Bush replied to her that he wouldn't dignify her question with a response. It was after this debacle that Moos was removed from whatever CNN post she'd been working in. I'm assuming she had been assigned to cover some Presidential events, but couldn't find that she'd ever been a member of the White House Press Corps. Wikipedia has this: "In 1981, she joined CNN as a reporter. It was there that she covered stories ranging from political corruption to the United Nations during the 1991 Gulf War."

And this: "In the 1990s, Moos began to report on unusual and off-beat soft news stories, which is her current trademark."

The change in her assignment is more than likely linked to her embarrassing CNN at that press conference.

I tried searching using various keywords, but didn't get any hits on the event, but like I said, I saw it live, probably on CNN back when Papa Bush was still President. She was trolling for the Clintons even then.

the media coordinated on the machado story.

the media coordinated on the tax deduction story.

FNC was caught faking the post debate Clinton bump.

if cnn and fnc and msnbc were pacs they would have been sanctioned for being coordinated by Clinton.
