Regardless of the 13th Zodiac Sign Controversy, NASA Says Astrology Fake

"NASA caused quite a stir when news of the space agency changing the 12 zodiac signs, adding a 13th sign called Ophiuchus, surfaced online. However, NASA has denied such claims and said that with or without the change in zodiac signs, astrology is still fake.

The ruckus was caused when Cosmopolitan posted an article, saying that NASA has decided to change the astrological signs for the first time in 2,000 years. The article says that the change was caused by the stars and Earth's axis being different today than it was in the past."

“One would think that anyone trying to make a deal out of these constellations would notice when the sun, moon, etc. are “in” them and go according to that.”

Another thing: since the stars that make up the constellations are light years away your daily horoscope may be right, but it’s off by at least a few thousand years!
:D

Certainly in a conventional-astronomy sense they do. Ginormous, and yet even artistic.

As for ancient interpretations of constellations... “Test everything. Hold onto the good. Avoid every form of evil.”

It seemed plausible to me that the idea of influences upon various people might be empirically valid. And yet it is still the moral choice of the person about what to do with that influence. Qualities are not necessarily either virtue or vice; what is done with a quality makes it a virtue or a vice.

Then there’s also Aristotle’s “Golden Mean”.

Don’t know about that, but I do think the heavens sometimes serve as signals to mankind as a whole.

e.g. “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars.”

I think that the season a baby is born in does indeed affect their emotional and mental outlook from the beginning, and I’ve read at least two studies that suggest that there are health variations and longevity issues that correspond to birth season, probably having to do with temperature, food supply, light, maternal stress level during gestation, etc. I suspect that astrology is merely a pre-scientific way to try and explain these patterns.

LOL, that's a great observation!

Given the movement of stars within our galaxy and the size of the galaxy (about 100,000 light years across), it would be pointing at something completely different.

Today, it would be possible to compute it -- we should have enough information on at least the stars in the various constellations.

I assume you mean the time of year on earth, totally unrelated to astrological charts (the stars). Could be, I’ve never researched it.

If this means astrological, I color skeptical about that. The Magi saw a star that looked like a miracle. The moon occasionally shines red (this is scientifically due to weather conditions, but the point is how it looks from the earth). A friend of mine who has been under a terrific spiritual assault all his life said that when he was a child, he saw a star fall when he asked God for a sign; this struck me as a suggestion of how Lucifer was cast out of heaven when he sinned.

Constellations don’t exist as actual astronomical objects.

Yup. If we could see the Big Dipper as it looks right now it would very different - from earth we’re seeing how it looked a long, long time ago.

It might be.

This would be an area for psychologists to delve into. Being good secular scientists and not accepting the supernatural as part of their world view, they would call the correlations a coincidence. Whether spiritually minded people would take this further would be up to them.

The model you suggest — gross seasonal effects — might explain why the imputed birth sign of a person has not changed with the procession of the equinoxes. Horoscopes “cast” that way would “work better.”

“Astrology is fake.” Hmmph. Sounds like something a Libra would say. Remember, these are the people who will also tell you that Perfessional Rasslin’ is fake.

This is akin to declaring Pluto a non-planet. The ecliptic has passed through Ophiuchus since I was a boy (ancient times), and very long before that. Nothing new has happened in the sky to precipitate a change in definition.

In any case, defining the Zodiac as 12 or 13 (or 14, for that matter), is a matter of arbitrary definitions and arbitrarily defined boundaries. Maybe NASA is just trying to get some attention.

Yup, they have no astronomical meaning other than as a convenient “map” to tell people where to look for some celestial whatever or for use in navigation.

This has raised a debate between “sidereal” astrologers (who have embraced Ophiuchus into their predictive model) and standard ones (who have not).

Allegedly, Ophiuchus luvs snakes.
