Around 4,000 young Swedes, 18-year-olds of both sexes, are expected to be called up each year.
The move was "an intelligent proposal given that we have seen for a number of years now that volunteers are not sufficient to supply either the quality or quantity of soldiers" needed, Johan Osterberg, a researcher from the School for Advanced Defence Studies, told news agency TT.

Around 10% of the Sweden born population of 18 year old males.
“Sweden is like a gigantic Marin County.”
That’s a keeper. Good one.
We have plenty of unwed mothers hanging around as well. Lots of CAT 3&4 folks who long ago would have been screened out. Lots of folks who wouldn’t be there except by virtue of reduced height, weight & physical fitness standards.
I’ll bet that government benefits in Sweden are more generous than those the military give out. We can’t let it happen here.
I would hope so. Don’t give weapons and training to them.

Is service in the reserve components so taxing that Preibus, Walker or Ryan couldn’t have managed it.
No actually it doesn’t look like our society as a whole, it’s much more discriminating and in my opinion should be more so; elite schools and high income families are not represented very well. As regards unwed mothers, the more pertinent question is how many units deploy short of critical MOS personnel because of pregnancy.

Yes, service members are some of the best of our society - it was you, not I, that was talking about the poor quality of the members of our armed forces. And you can worry about units not being fit to deploy because of inferior personnel but my question concerning how many unwed mothers had given their lives in service to our country was meant for you to realize that not only the elite step up and serve.
In the grand scheme of things quite few both in absolute numbers or as a percentage of overall casualties. One thing is for sure, once upon a time the military was much more selective and had a qualitatively better force than they do now.
By the way, what’s your experience been in terms of deploying with a unit?
