They are going to follow the money and the pressure would be enormous to bring it back.

And it’s more than AT&T who are part of the US Internet Backbone. Many companies are ISPs and own it.

just called Sen. Dean Hellers Reno office and the clerk who answered the phone didn’t know anything about it. The clerks in Las Vegas and DC have heard about it but have no idea what the Senators position on the matter is. So, I feel I am correct in presuming that there hasn’t been much discussion in his office on the subject.

Wow that is sad...Well if I talk to Cruz office, I will pass it along...There has been so much noise in the media with terrorist attacks, police shootings (Another as I type this!, the debates, and now the override will suck up all the media airtime today...

So sadly not surprising that some Senators don’t know—but they should.

FOR NOW THE BEST BET IS TO CONTACT SENATE LEADERSHIP TO SUPPORT SB3034 AND CALL LOCAL HOUSE MEMBERS BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL, I REPEAT ALL, UP FOR REELECTION AND THE HOUSE STILL HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PUT HR5418 INTO THE CONTINUING RESOLUTION...

SOME GOOD NEWS IN THE HOUSE-—NOW HAVE 46 CO-SPONSORS... CONGRESSMAN DUFFY’S OFFICE SAID FOR FOLKS TO ASK CONGRESS REPS TO CO-SPONSOR THE BILL HR5418 AND VOTE YES...I CALLED MINE AND HE SAID HE WAS CONSIDERING IT—PROBABLY SAYING THAT BECAUSE HE IS UP FOR RE-ELECTION BECAUSE HE NEVER EVER HAS A POSITION PRIOR TO A VOTE...ONE OF MY PET PEEVES.

CRUZ OFFICE SAID THAT MCCONNELL DID NOT PUT HIS PROTECTING INTERNET FREEDOM ACT INTO THE CONTINUING RESOLUTION...BUT HOUSE STILL CAN AND THEN HOPEFULLY A FLOOR VOTE.

CALLED MCCONNELL’S OFFICE TODAY AND HE IS BLAMING THE DEMOCRATS...SORRY I THINK HE IS RESPONSIBLE AND HE NEEDS TO BE PRESSED TOO...

“Creating drama about this issue ...”

The REALITIES of this issue are this:

Paul Rosenweig

My testimony today is the product of more than two years of working within ICANN on the proposed IANA transition. I (along with many others, including my Heritage colleague Brett Schaefer) participated extensively in this process through testimony, research and publications ... [he lists very specifically his involvement] ... and some of my suggestions have been incorporated into the final CCWG-Accountability proposal and the revised bylaws.

In my testimony today, I want to address five key issues that I think warrant substantial caution:

• The IANA transition is a leap in the dark. Nobody can reasonably tell you that there is certainty about how it will work out. Yet the safe and secure functioning of the network is vital to economic and political freedom around the globe. It would be prudent to develop experiencewith the new governance model during a trial period before the transition is made irrevocable.

• ICANN is incorporated in California. Yet some around the globe question that decision and are working, as part of follow on work, to see ICANN moved to another jurisdiction. Assuredly, the American role in overseeing ICANN’s operations should not be terminated until that issue is resolved.

• The US government is delegated as the operator of the .Gov and .Mil top level domains. Rather than guaranteeing the permanent continuation of that role by way of contract, the NTIA and ICANN have chosen to exchange letters which, in the end, promise the US that ICANN will follow its policy and notify the government before any re-delegation is made.

Thus, American control of .Gov and .Mil (which are essential to the continued stable operations ofAmerican government IT systems) is not assured by any enforceable mechanism.

[EMPHASIS: .gov and .mil “NOT ASSURED BY ANY ENFORCEABLE MECHANISM.”]

Who is Paul Rosenweig?

1. Department of Homeland — deputy assistant secretary for policy.

2. Currently he runs a consulting organization for Homeland.

3. Rosenweig authored and edited numerous books on cyber-security and freedom of speech. [He also produced DVDs on those subjects.]

4. As for his politics, He’s been writing Heritage Foundation columns all the way back to 1977.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The threat to military sites specifically:

Regarding Rosenzweig’s concerns about .mil and .gov ...

[quote]

This reaffirmation [about how ‘safe’ military sites and government sites are] was made through an exchange of letters. Not only are the letters non-legally binding, they actually acknowledge the possibility that at some point a separation of the IANA function from ICANN might threaten the stability and security of the US government’s top level domains. I can’t speak for other observers, but for me, as a lawyer, an exchange of letters is a way of avoiding a contractually enforceable obligation. I know why ICANN would prefer that course of action – I have no idea why the NTIA would accept it on behalf of the US government.

They won’t get away with total censorship if that’s the end goal.
I’d predict a creation of a US Intranet or Extranet and a type of gateway to the rest of the world. We still own our hardware.

HMM well I lie your prediction and I certainly hope it comes to pass...hate fact that lots of bad actors like China hack our systems...Constant notices of merchant, credit card, municipality hacks...perhaps a US internet would be a great alternative...Not sure how feasible it is—and how much will to do it...all the big Technocarts are supporting the open borders concept and UN globalization so they support ICANN outside US control.

However, the desire of the liberals is to not necessarily totally censor all speech, just to limit it—perhaps by fear like by what they did to Michael Savage this week—shutting down his show when he began discussing Queen Clinton’s health...

It is chilling and I suspect the a loss of First Amendment rights is a lot closer than we think...

It doesn’t matter that someone running things wrote for the Heritage Foundation; he likely is blackmailed now and since 0bama wants it, that is assurance it has America’s downfall as the goal.

All congressmen who vote for it or allow it to happen should be hanged, not hung, “hanged”.

This is the part I was asking for links for...clearly no one said this...

China can get the best talent and they can work remotely, live in their own countries and get paid with money the US has supplied China through the trade deficit.

Any further news on the status of these bills?

FYI, thanks a LOT for this post - I called Cornyn’s office, and left a detailed email with Ryan’s. Neither message was mealy-mouthed - I told them both that this was more important than the Panama Canal giveaway by Carter.

I hope that they’re all being deluged. Maybe they can do a two-fer by thwarting Obama twice in one week (I’m happy that Congress FINALLY developed the balls to override this scumbag’s veto. It is only about 7 1/2 years too late, but at least it was done...and nobody got killed for it, either, so maybe they can learn that it isn’t so hard to do, after all).

Thank you for your kind words...and your excellent messages to DC...I am getting rather overwhelmed with the negative nellies that seem to be frequenting FR. Yes, maybe since Senate finally grew a spine, they might do something else—we will see.

UPDATE (Which is constantly changing.):

MCCONNELL (SHALL I SAY TURTLE TRAITOR OR TRAITOR TURTLE—EH WHICHEVER) DID NOT INCLUDE SB3034 IN THE BILL VOTED ON TODAY—HIS OFFICE IS BLAMING THE DEMOCRATS FOR LOADING PORK...I WAS NOT HAPPY AND REFLECTED SUCH WITH MY COMMENT. PHONE GIRL EVEN GOT SNIPPY W/ME BUT IF WE STILL HAVE THE MAJORITY THEN WE CAN VOTE FOR IT...GAFFNEY ARTICLE SUGGESTS THAT WE PRESSURE DEMOCRATS—EVEN HILLARY TO GET OBAMA TO NOT VETO. As I have said, would he veto with his precious Zika funding (slush fund) that he has been whining for?

FROM TALKING TO CRUZ AND DUFFY’S OFFICES GOING FORWARD FOR NOW (could change), THE BEST BET IS:

1. CALL LOCAL HOUSE MEMBERS BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL, I REPEAT ALL, UP FOR REELECTION (so they might actually care more) AND THE HOUSE STILL HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PUT HR5418 INTO THE CONTINUING RESOLUTION...HOUSE MEMBERS NEED TO SUPPORT THE HR5418 AND CO-SPONSOR THE RESOLUTION...Then hopefully get a floor vote on Friday. I asked Cruz office what happens if no Floor vote on CR, and he did not know...

2. CONTACT SENATE LEADERSHIP (MCCONNELL OR CORNYN AND SATELLITE OFFICES MAY WORK BETTER) TO SUPPORT SB3034.

SOME GOOD NEWS IN THE HOUSE-—DUFFY NOW HAS 46 CO-SPONSORS.

DUFFY OFFICE SAID IT WOULD HELP IF DEMOCRATS COULD PUT PRESSURE ON OBAMA TO SIGN THE BILL WITH 5418 PROTECTING INTERNET FREEDOM ACT PROVISIONS...~ Eh I don’t know why Obama would veto bill with precious Zika funding in it anyway, but that is a concern. DUFFY BELIEVES BEST WAY TO GET HOUSE VOTE IS THRU LOTS OF CO-SPONSORS...BUT THEY DON’T SEEM TO BELIEVE GOP HOUSE LEADERSHIP IS AGAINST IT...

CRUZ OFFICE SAID THAT MCCONNELL DID NOT PUT PROTECTING INTERNET FREEDOM ACT INTO THE CONTINUING RESOLUTION...BUT HOUSE STILL CAN AND THEN HOPEFULLY A FLOOR VOTE ON FRI.

CALLED MCCONNELL’S OFFICE TODAY AND HE IS BLAMING THE DEMOCRATS...THEY WANT TO LOAD UP PORK...IMHO I THINK HE IS RESPONSIBLE AND HE NEEDS TO BE PRESSED TOO...

It did!

I know, hard to believe FR used to have people who actually went out and picketed in DC...Can you believe it? Now there are so many rather defeatist negative nellies.

Glad Trump does not share their attitude or he would not be the next Prez!!!

The House stopped this twice before, I am hoping that because it is an election year, they will listen to constituents who are asking them to co-sponsor HR5418...

I put some updates in...See Post 90 of this thread.

All the titans of the internet: google, amazon, facebook, and twitter — they don’t need the ‘free speech’ zone of the internet anymore. They could unite the rest of the internet where tyrants want to censor free speech.

All those titans (and their media allies) do not want anything but their own domains on the internet, but they will allow others and sideline them in a myriad of ways. Even large commercial companies could then be forced to pay sky high rates for access just like the bad old days when network TV was the only media game in town. The rest of us will be doled out cleverly censored Facebook accounts. The censorship will be hidden deep in the source code where nobody can find it. It will very subtly suppress or alter content.

Trump is OK and some others, but the issue is designed to raise noise with the Grassroots for political benefit for the GOPe. I support Trump and a few others, very few but not the vast majority of Republican politicians.

Signing off for tonight. Sorry the House caved. Perhaps one intelligent soul will say or do something. Here is where Trump fails us. He is so focused on his win that he does not see we need his support. I like his feeling of indignation at what is happening. I thought maybe he and Cruz would unite behind this issue after their rapprochement. Guess not.

One more day. Good night.

At least Cruz is trying...

Got thru to Cruz offices, the offices are still open and messages will be forwarded

Cruz has just sent a letter to the NTIA National Telecommunication Information Administration (in the Dept. of Commerce) asking that the transfer be delayed until Congress can vote on this issue as it was not part of the House or Senate votes this week.

Suggested contacting leadership MCCONNELL AND COYNYN TO LET THE KNOW YOU WANT NTIA TO DELAY TRANSFER AND A VOTE IN SENATE.

That is the best we can do for now...I will be leaving comments with them as well as House Leadership...
