A "mic" is a microphone. It converts audio to electronic or electrical signals for recording, amplification or other processes.
You speak INTO it.
An "earpiece", or headphone, etc., receives a signal and converts it to audio for the person wearing it to listen to.
I have never heard of, or seen anybody sticking a mic in their ear.
But then, this was probably written by a typical stupid, ignorant "journalist" that also believes an E-STOP button is a "reset" Button.
