The Communist Party of the Soviet Union should have transformed the bloc into a democratic entity rather than see it collapse, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.
You know my attitude towards the collapse of the Soviet Union. There was no need to do it. Reforms could have been undertaken, including those of democratic nature, the Russian president told the leaders of the parties which won seats in last week's general election.
But I want to point out that the Communist Party was in charge of our former homeland, the USSR, not any other, Putin added.

Greatest Russian leader since Peter the Great.
Translation: Putin thinks it’s not too late to reconquer the old Soviet Empire.
Isn’t that what Gorbachev tried to do?
Start with the central Asian states and kick Muslim butt.
Shouldn't an ex-KGB agent know this?
I wonder what the former Soviet citizens living in the outlying territories would say about that. It seems that the last time they saw the opportunity to leave they voted with their feet.
It was in the process of being reformed, under Gorbachev, which is why it collapsed.
Shouldn’t an ex-KGB agent know this?
#############
Yes, since they are the ones who make the decision to pull the plug.
Exactly. Gorby thought reform could be contained but the first whiff of freedom led to more desire for freedom.
Who destroyed it?
Didn’t it sort of fall apart on its own?
They were attempted - but the nomenklatura fought them every step of the way.
It was clear to every one after the August coup, that the Communist Party was a criminal organization and preserving its rule would doom the big country to decades of endless stagnation.
The only way forward was to break up the country. Given the situation, a desperate time called for a desperate measure.
In my view, the Eurasian Union is more than an adequate replacement for the deceased USSR.
“I wonder what the former Soviet citizens living in the outlying territories would say about that. It seems that the last time they saw the opportunity to leave they voted with their feet.”
Indeed they did. The Soviet Constitution provided for orderly secession of constituent republics, which was done. It was not an ad hoc patch job; they followed their law.
John Paul II would have taken issue with that rather odd statement.
“In my view, the Eurasian Union is more than an adequate replacement for the deceased USSR.”
The major trade route for millennia, free of Marxist taint, does indeed make more sense.
Been saying he’s still a commie all this time. Even FReepers have tried to tell me I’m nuts. KGB leopards don’t change their spots!
Putin is one of the ONLY leaders in the world who fights AGAINST the U.N/NWO and has spoken out on the assault on Christians worldwide.
a) Anti-ISIS, Anti-NWO Commie
b) Pro-ISIS, Pro-NWO Muslim Commie who watches the mass slaughter of Christians in the Middle East and does nothing about it.
Well, which is it?
Translation: There was no reason for the west to rape Russia in the transition from communism. Our advisors helped them privatize and sell state assets for kopeks on the ruble creating the oligarchs during Clintons administration. Their economy collapsed during this time and life expectancy dropped several years. The advisors raked in Millions and good times for all except Russians.
No, it didn’t have to be this way.
Putin does not want to revive the USSR. The past remains in the past.
Rather like many Russians, he laments the dissolution of the cultural, social and economic bonds that held the Soviet people together.
Those were broken asunder with the disappearance of the Soviet Union and reconstructing them is an arduous and complicated task.
No one in Russia or the post-Soviet space misses the Communist Party and no one in free elections looks forward to restoring its rule.
It should be pointed out the Russian Communist Party received 14% of the vote in the recent State Duma election.
Nostalgic feelings about the Soviet Union do not include any affection for or pining for the days of Communist rule.
I’m at the point where I don’t care if Russia is communist or capitalist. The fact that we see them as enemies is idiotic.
