So far as I can find out, he didn't make that claim in his book, but during a campaign appearance. He didn't know his father, so maybe he thought of his grandfather that way. He also said his uncle liberated Auschwitz, which would only have been possible if the uncle fought in the Soviet Red Army.

Were those lies, or accidental misstatements? I can't say for sure. He does stretch the truth when it's to his advantage, but it's so easy to prove he was wrong about this things that it's hard to think he'd convince anybody for long.

If he were a Republican, snopes.com and other liberals would call him a liar or an idiot, but he's a Democrat, so they give him a pass.
