Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg pledges $3bn to rid the world of all disease
Marion Dakers AP 21 September 2016 8:22pm
The Facebook founder and his wife, who pledged to give away 99pc of their wealth to good causes following the birth of their daughter last year, said the money would be used to assist scientific work and build new research tools.
The goal, which they are unlikely to live to see accomplished, is to "cure, prevent or manage all disease" in the next 80 or so years.
"So if you even just assume that we'll be able to continue to make progress on that same trajectory, then that implies that by the end of this century we will have been able to solve most of these types of things," Mr Zuckerberg said.
He and Ms Chan, who has worked as a paediatrician, have spent the past two years speaking to scientists and other experts to plan the endeavour.
He emphasised "that this isn't something where we just read a book and decided we're going to do.
"We spend 50 times more on health care treating people who are sick than we spend on science research (to cure) diseases so that people don't get sick in the first place," Mr Zuckerberg said.
He added that the approach reflects a belief that "people are always going to suffer from disease so therefore we should focus on treating people who are sick."
The Facebook founder is worth about $56bn, thanks to shares in his own company.
Mr Zuckerberg has asked other shareholders to allow him to give away his stock without losing control of the company.
Their announcement comes a day after Microsoft made a pledge to solve the problem of cancer within a decade by reprogramming diseased cells.

I’ll bet he dies before he rids their world of all disease. I would bet that we all will.
And i bet he has all the plans and projections of building his city in space, Elysium.
Where all diseases are cured by an autodoc.
I bet Kanye West thinks his name is on the check.
The death rate is still one apiece. It will remain that way.
I very much dislike some of Zukerberg’s business policies...
and politics....
but if this article is accurate, at least he is trying to give his $$$ to causes that benefit people
compare this with Soros, who uses his money in so many evil and destructive ways I can’t possibly begin to even discuss them all here.
curing human diseases? Good For Z!
If he’s serious I’ll give him credit for bringing it up and making the offer. More than any other billionaire has proposed so far.
zukkerweed is a big, fat nothing. His stupid website is funded by the NSA to collect info on everyone. He’s a stooge, who can’t lose.
I wish he’d “rid the world” of himself.
Some people consider aging a disease. Gonna get pretty crowded .....
The dude is a pompous, self-admiring do-gooder with an overinflated sense of his importance.
Hardship builds wisdom. I doubt Zuck the shmuck has had to face much hardship and with his billions he’ll never have to face any. So when he hits forty he’ll still be quite a baby I bet. Just an immature baby with a lot of money to blow. And He ain’t taking one penny with him.
Does that include the disease of moonbatism?
Some people think they are God. Man has made progress on curing and helping some diseases, but there will always be new ones. I’m not being pessimistic, I just think that’s a scientific reality. But good for him if he wants to spend his money on actual research and/or actual results.
All that money will go into “Foundations”: His own, Bill Gates’, The Clinton’s. He will get a tax write off on all of it, and most of it will seep back into his own pockets after his co-conspirators take their cut.
If he really wanted to do something useful to ease suffering with it he would donate it to St. Jude’s Hospital or something similar.
Three billion dollars would also just about cover the increased healthcare costs in one medium sized American town for one year, due to his buddy Barry’s insurance scam.
He thinks he’s GOD!!! Woe to him.......
He thinks he’s God.
If you are not part of the solution, there is good money to be made prolonging the problem
Amen.
