The leader of a statewide law enforcement union said Sunday Nevadas expanded background check ballot question isnt about protecting the Second Amendment its about promoting public safety.
Jim Dunlap, president of the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers, told the Las Vegas Sun he disagrees with most of the states sheriffs when it comes to Question 1.
As top law enforcement officials, they have an obligation to their employees and to the people who elect them, he said. They say their opposition is about the Second Amendment, but our stand is on public safety. This measure will make it safer for our communities, safer for public employees and safer for the people we represent.
Dunlaps union represents 1,500 police officers, corrections officers and probation officers throughout Nevada.
With this background check, well close the loophole and prevent them (criminals) from getting a weapon at a gun show or meeting a guy in a parking lot (after using a website to set up a gun sale) and going home still angry, he said. We are saving peoples lives.

That's a pretty powerful argument right there. If we could cure the heartbreak of psoriasis for only a few people...
an enemy of the constitution is my enemy also. The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
Most certainly is about the SECOND AMENDMENT. Safety is in there too...but this has leftist fingerprints all over it.
Jim Dunlap, president of the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers...is one of those domestic enemies we’ve been warned about.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Benjamin Franklin
Odd, that is precisely what the 2dA is about.

Clealy this isnt the case. Criminals still get guns and no amt of checking will stop that.
And if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor. Never trust a word these people say.
Reporter: But what about the argument that someone in that same situation could go to the black market?
Dunlop: People dont stand on corners and sell drugs or guns. The criminal element, the people who are involved in the black market, they sell only to people they know. Thats why cops use confidential informants to buy drugs. And even within those organizations in the drug trade, and when you have a confidential informant, trying to purchase a gun is even more of a challenge, because use or possession of a firearm with those crimes comes with heightened penalties. So how do you find someone to buy a gun from on the black market? If you did find someone dealing guns illegally and said, Hey, you got a gun I can buy? Theyd probably say, Are you a cop? So that just wont happen. People see it on TV shows, but it doesnt happen.
I have never seen a Union head of Police Officers that has ZERO clue about crime, before.
It would be a better use of time and effort to cure the heartbreak of cirrhosis...
Hope the sheeple of Nevada see through the crap this bureaucrat masquerading as a law enforcement officer is spouting.
Didn't think so.
Look at how much info you have to give the government**. In order to get a background check, the buyer/seller have to use an FFL dealer. He in turn requires the buyer to fill out (2005 version)
PAGE ONE
and
PAGE TWO. Pay attention to items 26-30.
Print these out, carry them with you and when the next numbnuts bleats about "lessening crime", have him to fill these two sheets out and ask him if he feels comfortable that the govt has all this info on him.
The problem is that the non-gun-owning public doesn't give a crap about registration, so I suspect Nevada will be the next state to go this route.
**Theoretically, these forms are supposed to stay with the dealer until he quits business. Evidently the BATF can't wait that long as reports have come in from all parts of the country that when the agents do an annual audit, they photocopy the dealer's entire book of 4473s.
A load of garbage from a statist progressive bozo.
Our Founders knew that without freedom and liberty, there will eventually be no safety nor security.
