At a discussion about Saudi Arabias Vision 2030 in London recently, I found myself engaged in a conversation with young Saudi female students. The conversation mainly revolved around how they wanted to move to Dubai after completing their degrees in the UK.
Indeed, the vast majority of Saudi women after graduating from universities abroad, find themselves facing two choices: either to return home to work and be subject to social and regulatory limitations, or to take the harder choice and move elsewhere. It is mostly Dubai due to its proximity to home.
... Looking at the figures released by the Ministry of Higher Education, which shows that women represent 26 percent of the number of students studying abroad, this means that Saudi Arabia has spent in excess of $50 million on womens overseas education during the last 10 years.
... The consequences to the Saudi economy are dire because the billions spent in educating women will be another countrys gain. The current situation of womens rights is characterized by a status quo, and although there have been some forward thinking steps in favour of women back in Saudi Arabia, these are insufficient to meet the aspirations of a new generation of women in terms of professional development and equal opportunities found in leadership positions. The social restrictions are also an issue for Saudi women who have become used to a certain culture in the West. If they returned home they would face a restriction of movement due to a ban on driving as well as barriers to access to justice, and family pressure caused by a male guardianship system. It has left some of the most educated, talented and entrepreneurial women with no choice but to move elsewhere away from these limitations.

Why? One word answer: Sharia
Yep, how do you keep women in a form of bondage in Saudi, after they have seen other cultures in which women are treated much more humanely???
If Saudi wants a “brain drain” of their best educated and qualified women, that is a societal choice that they make. And that choice hurts their society.
I guess it’s all relative. For a woman, compared to the 7th century retrogrades in Saudi Arabia it must feel like Nirvana.
Just give them an IUD and send them home.
Saudi is a classic rentier state whose Wahabi fundamentalist system survives thanks to massive oil revenue. They should be thankful that they have survived this far. Without oil, they would be still a small band of backward tribes, clinging to their extreme belief.
I personally think that the middle east is about 20 or 30 years away from having a radical change in there culture. it is this generation of women educated outside the middle east witch will cause a melt down in Islam. unfortunately we in the west have to wait for the effect of theses women on there culture because it will be the children of theses women that makes the changes. Islam depends upon a big uneducated population and will fall eventually because of this. unfortunately till then we have a region that will be violent to the rest of the world..
Are you sure about that? Don’t we have the most liberated women in the world here? Yet the feminazis are big supporters of islamists.
We are heading toward Saudi Arabia faster than they’re heading toward us.
Mid-East would be engulfed in a regional war for prolonged period of time. Various religious sects, and ethnic groups are at odds. There are enough canon fodders in Mid-East. There are way too many people than the carrying capacity of the region can handle, with repercussion to the rest of world. It will go on until enough blood is shed.
Which is why we shouldn’t be educating any Saudis on our soil. Let them rot.

The total average annual sum spent by Saudi Arabia’s government on each female student is estimated to be between $35,000-45,000 a year. Looking at the figures released by the Ministry of Higher Education, which shows that women represent 26 percent of the number of students studying abroad, this means that Saudi Arabia has spent in excess of $50 million on women’s overseas education during the last 10 years.
So call it $40k per female student. That's $50m/$40k = 1250 students over ten years, or 125 per year. BFD (and I don't mean Boston Fire Department).
We screwed up the first Gulf War. Saddam should have been given a free pass to conquer Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, as long as oil remained cheap and no nukes were being developed. That should have been the deal. No boots on the ground! No coffins at Andrews!
But imagine videos of the Saudi religious police being fed thru wood chippers for defying Saddam!

Maybe this is something that we can encourage the Kurds to do.
Dear Kurdish people, if you take over Saudi Arabia and wipe out the wahhabi clerics the vast majority of the American public will be on your side.
I believe this is the first time I have ever seen the words “Saudi Arabia” and “talent” in the same sentence.
