R+6 had the upper hand and was liquidating the jihadi resistance. The U.S. pushed for the cease-fire with the hope of propping up their jihadis. Putin is on the side of secular SAA, while the U.S. is siding with the FSA and assorted jihadis. The U.S. wants Assad out of there and are doing everything they can to facilitate this. Russia would rather see a secular government over an Sunnite Islamist regime which would persecute and/or slaughter Christians, Alewite, and any other non-hardcore Sunnis.
