WASHINGTON In a unanimous vote Saturday, the Alexandria City Council has decided to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway, a roadway named for Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy.
I could honestly say, personally, raise my taxes to pay for it, to satisfy my parents, my grandparents, Councilman Willie F. Bailey Sr. said.
The council discussed the possibility of changing the name to Patrick Henry but tabled the discussion for later. An advisory committee did not recommend name changes for all the streets in Alexandria named after Confederate soldiers but has now opened the door for neighbors who want a street change to petition for one.

There’s another thread about the corruption of these same individuals and the fraud in the voter rolls. More registered voters than residents 18 and older.
How about renaming all the Malcolm X roadways too.
I don’t know about the Jefferson Davis part, but they sure as heck should change the “highway” part - to Parking Lot, because that what it, and most other roads in NOVA are.
In the Seminary Valley section of Alexandria there are quite a few streets named after Confederates. Names like Pickett, Owen, Naylor, Latham, Rutland, Mansfield and so on. Maybe they should rename them “People’s Street # 14”, “People’s Street # 15” and so on. Maybe rename Taney Avenue as “Avenue of Revolutionary Consciousness”.
The VA state legislature passed a bill just this year to protect war memorials, including Confederate ones. While it was vetoed by that crook Terry McAuliffe, it still suggests they're probably getting nowhere with that proposal anytime soon.
(old Firesign Theater reference)
too funny they let the name of a road influence their feelings to the point of having a vote on it?
I recent went into NYC and my driver was telling me how many bridges etc were being renamed.......stupidest thing I ever heard of to waste time on that and likely confuse people in the area because now it’s known by two names.
How is that possible. Considering he Dems are KKK?
They will probably do that to Hammond Middle School. It was built as a high school and named after Francis C. Hammond, who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. And yes, they might just name it Commie Martyrs High School.
Disgusting.
Stupid.
I have lived here 50 years and always thought it kinda weird that they named the road after him.
Yeah, they should have named it after a Republican, don't you think?
Going thru the City of Alexandria/Old Town, Rt 1/Jeff Davis Hwy is already called Patrick St. heading North and Henry St. heading south. Rt 1 was until relatively recently pretty ghetto. Now it’s gotten all yuppified.
I still think of Washington St in Alexandria as the main thoroughfare, and know it won’t be long before they vote to remove the Confederate soldier from Washington Street.
“Great. They’ll name it to ML King Highway and turn the major thoroughfare in the city to a ghetto... “
Yeah, want to know what area in a city to avoid? Look for the MLK Blvd! You can bet it will be in the middle of where you don’t want to be. Sad commentary on Martin’s legacy that his name is used to denote the very place he sought to eliminate.
Also avoid any place that has a “Brotherhood Way” in it.
Well thy did rename the airport after Reagan. There are a lot of people around here that can’t bring themselves to calling it that.
Near where I grew up in Spring Valley, NY the intersection of MLK and Harriet Tubman Blvd is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the Hudson Valley. I know Black people who’d be scared out of their wits to venture there in broad daylight. It is a damn shame.
