More than forty per cent of young singletons in Japan are virgins, according to a new study that highlights concerns about the country's demographic challenges. Japan already suffers from the world's oldest population and a shrinking birthrate, with the government struggling to incentivise marriage and parenthood.
Now a survey of unmarried people aged 18 to 34 found that around 42 per cent of men and 44.2 per cent of single women had never had sex.
The study is carried out by Japan's National Institute of Population and Social Security every five years.
The country's government has worked hard to booth the birthrate in recent years, providing incentives such as support for child care and tax breaks.
The new data however indicates, that, if anything Japanese men and women are growing apart.
Nearly 90 per cent of the respondents said they want to get married “sometime in the future.”
But 30 per cent of the 2,706 men sampled and 26 per cent of the 2,570 female respondents said they were not currently looking for a relationship.
“They want to tie the knot eventually. But they tend to put it off as they have gaps between their ideals and the reality,” Futoshi Ishii, head researcher for the study, told Japan Times. “That’s why people marry later or stay single for life, contributing to the nation’s low birthrate.”
The lack of sexual activity can seem at odds with a society saturated with sexual images, from television and manga comics to city billboards.
But recent years have seen a shift in traditional family structures, and a protracted economic slowdown as a global powerhouse, which has reportedly resulted in many men struggling to hold down secure, full-time jobs.

For one thing, "after the population declines by 50%" you are, nationally speaking, no longer a viable ethnic group in your own country. You are old Germany full of young Turks. Your successors have already moved in and it's their kids who are occupying all those little seats in grades K-3. And their dads and moms are the big-city mayors.
For another thing, "after the population declines by 50%" you are, nationally speaking, no longer fertile.. Look at the average age for females in Germany, Japan, Italy and Austria: 45-50. The average age for females in Palestine (Gaza trip), Yemen, Nigeria and Somalia is 15-20.
Just who did you say would be "more comfortable with starting families"? The perimenopausal fraus of German couldn't do it if they tried.
Destroying a marriage culture is a lot like destroying a farming culture. People have to the mindset, the 10,000 unwritten skills and preferences, and the cultural supports all around them, passed on in a continuous, cross-generational way.
I'm not at all sure that, once destroyed, you can ever get that back again.

Then you have the problem of an unwillingness to allow occidentals to immigrate. Thus exacerbating the problem. Demographically speaking, Japan will lose something like 40% of it’s populace in 50 years.
Nature abhors a vacuum. Other populations will move in.

I’ve been to Japan many times. I’ve always been treated with respect and see a low crime culture. That said, it is a weird place. I can’t tell what TV shows are for adults or children. You see very little sexual content. Even the “girl music bands”, while pretty, are nothing like those in the west (all sexual). They have cartoon characters for everything, go into a CD shop and EVERY SINGLE COVER has one.
In some Asian cultures you do hear that wives are for babies, women are for sex (even if you’re married). I’ve heard this more than once. Very strange place but I always enjoy being there.

That said, Japan is one orderly place and all the trains run on time.
They are also not big on "diversity". An American sticks out like a sore thumb. I don't think Muslims are even allowed in.
During Roman times it was the germanic tribes that filled the vacuum because the sophisticated Romans lines died out.
Another thought, remember James A.Michener’s book Hawaii? I don’t think he would recognize the culture anymore.
Having lived in Japan for several years, I do not find this unbelievable at all. My experience has been that the culture in Japan is polite. But be not totally taken aback when I suggest that there are some who engage in sexual activity prior to marriage, both men and woman.

Oh the horror of it! Just imagine, 40% of young Japanese have chosen not to conduct themselves like the countless whores in western countries. They are truly shameless!
