The problem the “parties” have used state laws to become “quasi-governmental”! So they’re embedded in the political landscape, the original reality that they are private organizations is very blurred now. I am always amazed at the number of people even here on FR who think they have some sort of “constitutional coverage” over and above the normal freedom of assembly & right of free association (Yes I know that has been “narrowed” considerably but that’s different discussion!)
