It was. That's why I mention the part about stopping on the bridge by the Canal. That was the first time we saw it -- and it just didn't look real. Before that, all we saw was smoke, and the debris (dust, papers, etc) coming down around us. If you see the satellite picture, the path of the cloud was right over us.

I'd been staring at those towers for most of my life. I rode the express elevators many times when working as a messenger -- sometimes both towers in one trip. It was a lot to take it. It didn't seem possible. Like it was a special effect, some magic trip, illusion. You wait for the punchline and then it would be there again.

Funny thing, I took out the old White Pages at the end of the day. I found the listing for the smoker I shared ear buds with, just to make sure she got home okay. I promised her she wouldn't hear from me again, I just wanted to check in since we were dismissed from jury duty completely. Never spoke to her again. Wonder how she's doing these days.
