Before then actually, at least before Roosevelt got into the White House. In 1894 professors Woodrow Wilson of Princeton and Burt Wilder of Cornell formally debated the topic “Ought the Game of Foot Ball to Be Encouraged?" Wilder's answer was "NO!"

In 1898 the Brown Conference Committee Report sought to prevent college athletics “from interfering with the mental and moral training of the students.”

When I look at the NCAA today, I realize they were right.
