Not guilty. And by that I mean both that she’s fairly attractive and it’s utterly ridiculous she was arrested for sex with a 17 year old. There are a lot of real crimes in Cedar Rapids for the cops to concern themselves with. The age of consent in Iowa is 16. And she’s a only 24, probably barely more mature than him. Let’s not forgot our illustrious Newt Gingrich.

I agree that we have criminalized too much behavior that is simply inappropriate or immoral. IMO, the teacher should be fired but not jailed. The student was a “subordinate” to the teacher so there was a legitimate power imbalance in the relationship. In many organizations, an unreported relationship between a subordinate and a supervisor gets pink slips for both of them.
I'd be inclined to agree, if that was her crime. But, it wasn't.
This teacher was arrested for sex with a student. (That student also happened to be a minor but, that's beside the point.)
It's entirely reasonable for parents to expect that school faculty and staff will not engage in sexual relations with their kids under any circumstances, regardless of how "hot" anyone may be.
This isn't a simple hook-up between consenting individuals. This is someone who violated her position of sacred trust.
