...This was about as juicy a story as ever told on The Profit and it ended with Marcus walking away from an investment for the first time in this new season. He spent about $100,000 for capital improvements and upgrades to the systems at The Soup Market, but left without regret. His deal with Dave Jurena, the surviving owner was to invest $350,000, take 50% of the company and be 100% in charge, as we knew he would. They shook on it, but trouble and confusion began immediately.
The episode should have been called Who Is Grace and Why Isnt She Happy? Dave Jurena called Grace a former best friend, who after a falling out was being phased out of the company. It was as if the owner said to Marcus, Nothing to see here, keep moving, which of course just got Lemonis even more interested.
In truth, she was the second in command to Jurena, with many employees reporting to her, whose relationship with Dave became frayed after she rebuffed his romantic advances and filed a claim with the EEOC. She had been told to stay out of sight when the cameras came calling, and unbeknownst to Marcus, was about to be fired because Daves wife, who he clued into the mess, was jealous and always seemed to be lurking, though employed elsewhere on a fulltime basis.

Biggest business FAIL since the 240Sweet episode which was a class into itself.
The model for how an owner should act is Sweet Pete's candy in Jacksonville. Pete completely cooperated with Marcus and is now known for having the best candy shop in Jacksonville. Oh, and Sweet Pete showed up to advise the 240Sweet devils but he got the death stare from them.
I enjoy watching that show. But Markus has walked away from many projects in the past due to the stupid owners. I would think he’d sue them to get his money back, and rightfully so.
I can’t get over how STUPID some owners are. If you cooperate fully with Marcus, success is almost sure to be yours. Examples are Sweet Pete’s and the Simple Greek. Yet some remain idiots like Dave Jurena last night who hated the changes Marcus made and then reversed them when he was gone. To top it off he has an expensive sex harrassment lawsuit heading his way and the possible breakup of his marriage. Somehow Jurena thought if he told his employees not to mention Grace, that problem could be kept from Marcus.
Last night’s episode made me question this show’s premise.
Marcus has walked away from deals inside 15-20 minutes of air time and moved on to a second prospect.
Why he didn’t walk away when Dave Jurena walked out on him and didn’t even pick up his phone or return a call for an hour mystifies me. No investor would ever put up with such behavior.
This is one of the first times I’ve questioned the show’s legit premise and fallen into “oh yeah” reality show territory.
Returning from the beach last month, we swung by Shuler's BBQ in Latta SC and had lunch. It was one of The Profit success stories (not without bumps though).
