Japan To Provide Planes, Ships For Philippines Amid Sea Dispute With China
International Business Times / Reuters ^ | 06 September 2016

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday agreed to provide two large-sized patrol ships and lend up to five used surveillance aircraft to the Philippines, a Japanese government spokesman said, with both countries locked in territorial disputes with China.

Abe and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte agreed in Vientiane to strengthen cooperation to ensure a peaceful resolution of the South China Sea dispute, Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Koichi Hagiuda said.

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion of trade moves annually. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have rival claims.

An arbitration court in The Hague in July invalidated China's claims to the waterway after a case was brought by the Philippines, a ruling that Beijing refuses to recognize.

Japan's ties with China has been marred by a long-running territorial spat over a group of small islets in the East China Sea.

Japan has already agreed to provide 10 smaller-sized patrol ships to the Philippines.

Without the trained crews and pilots to man them, and the money to use and deploy them, this is pretty much a useless gesture.

Useless for actual defense but there is money to be made selling the tools of trade.

The President of the Phillipines might be wishing he wouldn’t have been so quick to say bad names about the guy Obama right now.

Can you see the battle lines forming? China is doing to the Pacific what Japan did in the 1930s. We know what THAT led to ...

Exactly.

That The US signed a war packed agreement with India last week that included Australia and Japan sent a clear message to China Esta who’s on who’s side regarding the South China Sea.

The agreement is not only for shared intelligence but the sharing of technology and bases to counter China.

While some may think this is important news it is A subject that seems to be floating under the radar.

Prior to World War I was a military arms race in the building of great battleships.

Today it is missile technology and robotics.

Japan wants the Philippines to do their fighting. They know how their enemies fought.

It wouldn’t have mattered if he had kissed obama’s a$$ on public tv. The US does NOT have anyone’s back at least for another four and a half months and our allies know it.

Normally the US would be providing this support but Japan knows we are not going to do anything under the puss king and can’t afford to allow continued Chinese expansion unchecked.

If Duterte wants U.S. support then he has an odd way of showing it.

My understanding is Duterte is taking care of his domestic drug and terrorist problem, and he is not taking any guff from Obama on the matter.

Looks like he can take care of his international problems all by himself as well.

The Philippine navy would not last 10 minutes against the Chinese in a hot skirmish. The US should be out front in allying with PI against Chinese aggression. The Japanese at least still understand the bigger threat. For Obozo, its all about his ego.

Ten minutes would be generous.

Duterte doesn't seem to want you.

As I said and you brushed off, Duterte has a mandate from his people to clean up his country, and he doesn’t want the US interfering in his domestic affairs. That’s different than not wanting allies against foreign attack.

That makes it all better.

I have no idea what your comment means or what you are arguing. If you want to converse with something more concrete than quips, let me know.
