When the original came out I wound up as one of the last of my group of friends to see it. I didn’t want to know how the movie portrayed different events and just wanted to see it with no idea what was coming.
They were talking about it one day and I said “hey, don’t tell me how it ends. I haven’t seen it yet”. I got some pretty shocked looks.

This is glorious news. The Passion was one of the greatest examples of modern Christian art I have ever seen.
Now I remember the whole theater was crying together.
Wow!
The Resurrection is quite a story too. Its where we are headed......

Passion 3 the Revenge would be accurate due to Jesus' return on a white horse with a flaming sword to bring as per Revelation.
Now if George Lucas gets involved, we'll probably see Passion 3: The Morman Awakens first.

The Passion was rough to watch, but of course I knew that going into it. Outside of the martyrdom of some of the apostles, the Book of Acts will be much less graphic and more uplifting at least.

I loved Passion and will look forward to this movie, although I think this is being spurred by the success of RISEN.

Plenty of material in Acts of the Apostles to make a fantastic movie. Action, adventure, suspense. Some minister in L.A. wanted to bankroll that sixty years ago, but he ended up with Plan Nine From Outer Space instead.

“although I think this is being spurred by the success of RISEN.”
That and... Mel’s divorce cleaned him out of most of his Passion profits. He announced this new film as soon as he was out from under that financial mess. I don’t doubt his sincerity, just saying he has faced massive financial challenges. Imagine handing over hundreds of millions to someone who had no part in making your film.

Theres not a lot of room for artistic license in this story. I think Dr. Luke did a pretty good job documenting things.

I think the Mary mind-meld scenes were appalling.
That alone killed it for me, not to mention all of the other extra-biblical inventions incorporated into it.

How about "Jesus Christ: The Later Years," chronicling his visits to France and Glastonbury?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_bloodline

You say :”He needs to leave out weird mystic visions from the screenplay.
Stick to the Bible, Mel.”
Straight up.
Those ‘visions” totally spoiled it. The story of Jesus needs NO embellishment.
Best “Jesus” movie is STILL Franco Zeffirelli’s “Jesus of Nazareth”
Probably the most top star-studded movie of all time - perfect casting, strong music theme, ‘Old Master paintings’ scenes... Robert Powell as Jesus - perfect.
Every Christian household should have this - and have a ‘family night’ to show it at least once a year - Easter and/or Christmas.
(That said, I hope Gibson uses Jim Caviezel for Jesus again - Beside the right face, Caviezel is a true Christian...)

What has diverged, the movie or the “rich history of the Church.”
Just not clear what you meant to say, so thanks in advance.

Are you speaking of the Church or the movie?

No one gets bent out of shape over The Song of Bernadette or Going My Way. I guess saints and singing priests are (or were) OK. It's beyond me why anyone would criticize a Roman Catholic director for the "catholic feel" of his cinematic masterpiece passion play, a traditional feature of Lent in Catholic countries.
