Just when it seemed like the negative image of Donald Trump as a xenophobic, racist, and cartoonish excuse for a presidential candidate was permanently stained into most of the voters' minds, someone on his campaign staff had the brilliant idea to accept the invitation to meet Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto in Mexico City.
And now that the meeting is over, and both Trump and Nieto have made their formal statements, it's clear Trump has been given a crucial presidential-looking shot in the arm from perhaps the one foreign leader we least expected to give it to him. But that's not where the positives for Trump end, not by a long shot.
Suddenly, we now have a new context for Trump's long-awaited speech on immigration. Before the meeting, Trump was facing a tough challenge. Several conservatives, and even one of his most ardent supporters in Ann Coulter, had been getting much attention as they accused Trump of flip-flopping on illegal immigration and especially the deportation question. There are reports the Trump campaign is hoping to gloss over deportation at least somewhat by focusing on securing the southern border with Mexico instead. That seems like it might be a tough needle to thread. But now that Trump is making the speech coming directly from that border, that new focus suddenly becomes more plausible.
The buzz is now about the Mexico meeting and fewer people are talking about deportation. And since President Peña Nieto himself made border security part of his own set of priorities in his portion of the news conference, this entire event is amounting to something of a home run for Trump and his quest for legitimacy.

“Had my 68th birthday yesterday”
Well, I had my 76th and I still feel like 35 (well sort of)!
Their mutual handshake after their statements caused meltdowns in newsroom all over the country.
That optic is going to be difficult on Clinton who can’t even get out of bed long enough to make a trip to Louisiana floods or Mexico or most other locations.
Jeb Bush’s head is literally in the shape of a mailbox
Wasn’t very much there to nit-pick...Trump just reiterated everything he said in the past...And the Mexican agreed with him (my guess is that from the private meeting, he wasn’t given any other option).
No “flip-flop” there at all....
If you have a chance, see or read, "Clinton Cash" and pay attention to the description of her visit to Columbia. Bill just so happened to be there at the same time with a big donor to the Clinton Crime syndicate. They all met with the outgoing president who granted a lot of special favors.
And unlike 0bama, Trump enthusiastically stated that he loves America. Refreshing.

#5 is ingenious.
Campaign staff my ASS! Trump did this own his own!
Happy Birthday Rooster!
Yup, good assessment. Trump set the firm expectation, with no wiggle room, that a wall will be built.
I imagine that it feels pretty good to the president of Mexico to consider that the next president of the United States may not be an abject liar traitor and pussy regarding everything this American continent stands for.
Imagine a Mexico that is friendly to the United States and can count on us to back them when they make efforts to stop illegal drug, islamic invasion and human trafficking across their own borders and ours.
Obama in his own way has disrespected Mexico, its borders and undermined its priorities by propping up supporting and arming the cartels who seek to control, overthrow or manipulate the Mexican government.
I would imagine El Presidente de Mexico is thinking to himself “it looks like I’m going to get a real man as a business in trading partner on the United States side of our border.”
It wouldn’t surprise me if Mexico was as fed up with our pussy president as we are. Perhaps that is why the president of Mexico wanted to have this meeting upfront with Donald so he doesn’t have to pay bribery money to the Hillary bitch just to get access on critical national security issues that Mexico has. He may be more pro trump then he is for Hillary, and he may be seeking to influence our election for Donald’s sake by speaking to Mexican-Americans as an interested third-party.
Mexico is not always our closest ally or partner politically. But we have to admit that Obama has betrayed every nation that once looked favorably upon us or sought our collaboration On worthy goals. And that betrayal includes Mexico. Fast and furious actually helped arm the Mexican cartels that have attacked and killed Mexico’s military and drug interdiction police forces.

“Well, I had my 76th and I still feel like 35 (well sort of)!”
Hehehehe, I am 72 and right between you two.
Yup. Trump’s remarks were very plain and firm. He was inclusive however about the US and Mexico partnering on these issues for the benefit of both countries.
“That optic is going to be difficult on Clinton who cant even get out of bed long enough to make a trip to Louisiana floods or Mexico or most other locations.”
I would not be surprised that Hillary would say “do you know who I am” and have the Mexican President fly up to meet her.
Yup. Trump made a speech backing Bibi several years ago. There will be an even better relationship between the two of them.
