Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff ousted in impeachment vote

BRASILIA — Brazil’s Senate ousted Dilma Rousseff as president Wednesday, voting overwhelmingly to impeach the leftist leader in the culmination of a protracted process that has divided the country.

The vote to impeach Rousseff was 61 to 20. Two-thirds of senators — 54 out of 81 — were needed for impeachment to pass.

Senators broke into cheering and applause after the electronic voting was announced and sang the national anthem, concluding a process that was given the go-ahead in December.

But a second vote to strip Rousseff of her political rights for eight years fell well short of the required two-thirds supermajority, as 42 senators voted in favor of the penalty, with 36 opposed and three abstentions. However, a “clean slate” law could preclude her from running for office, though not from taking up a government position.

“Coup-mongers! History won’t forgive you!” Rousseff’s supporters in the Senate chanted after the second vote. Hatshepsut. Cleopatra. Maria Theresa. Catherine the Great.

Competent but not always likeable.

Other than Golda Meir and Margaret Thatcher, have there been any competent, outstanding female heads-of-state?

I think that you'd have to go back as far back as Queen Victoria, or perhaps even Queen Elizabeth I, to find one.

While you're at it, the socialist Golda Meir can be scratched off your list, leaving us with Thatcher as the only really outstanding female leader in the 20th century.

With any luck, Rousseff’s successor Michel Temer (current Vice President and member of an opposing party) will move Brazil away from Lula’s legacy of Hugo Chavesismo-lite. However, I suspect that the country will be a basketcase for a long time to come no matter who is in charge.

There is a saying about Brazil (if I am remembering this correctly!), “Brazil is a future world power and always will be!”

Will the US Senate do it first to Biden then to O? I hope we don’t have to impeach Madame President...

Yes, two red leaders in Brazil gone - Lulu and terrorist Rousseff (her to jail). Now if we could only send Obama to join her. They have a lot in common. In fact, more than you know.

Next red to go, Maduro in Venezuela. Then hopefully, the volcano gods in Bolivia take mini-me psycho Morales as a sacrifice favor to the people of that country.

Could also take Correa of Ecuador - a Marxist crook, just like Hillary. They could be brother and sister for all we know - commies and corrupt criminals.

They sure produce drop dead gorgeous women, though. My nephew married one a few years ago. Went to the wedding reception of the son of another family friend earlier this summer and wowza! I had to ask him if she was as nice as she was beautiful.

They had a very long engagement, the last six months was just waiting for her U.S. spouse visa. My nephew had it easier since his worked for a big American company in Brazil. The company just arranged for a transfer and the spousal visa was issued within 6 weeks or so.

Funny how long they take to check out these gorgeous young ladies from Brazil but Muzzie terrorists get fast tracked in.

Couldn’t they just censure him and move on?

Think of the economy!

Impeachment never fed a starving child!

Everybody does it!

She has spoiled it for the other Bulgarian-Brazilians. It will probably be a long time before another Bulgarian gets to be President of Brazil.
