Nicolas Sarkozy has joined other conservative French politicians in demanding that border controls for thousands of migrants in Calais be shifted to Britain.
The former centre-Right president made the call in a speech in Le Touquet, the northern town where he signed agreements in 2003 allowing British officials to check passports in France and vice-versa, when he was interior minister.
The accords were part of a bilateral deal to close a former migrants centre at Sangatte, near Calais.
But Mr Sarkozy said France can no longer tolerate the presence of about 9,000 migrants living in the squalid Jungle camp in Calais while they attempt to smuggle themselves into Britain.

How about rounding them up and throwing them the hell out of the country. They’re basically already rounded up.
Stop trying to shove them into uk. Send them home now. Problem solved.
Kill all of them while they’re in one spot.
Norway wants a fence, Hungary wants a fence, France wants the “immigrants out of Britain...
Looks like the world is having trouble and is tired of “refugees”...
Obama and Hillary want them HERE!!!!!
F Obama and Hillary....
“... France wants the immigrants out of Britain...
That’s out TO Britain....
NIMBY played at the international level.
OK, cede Calais to the UK and let the Brits take care of it. They owned the place from 1347 until 1558 and this sort of problem never happened when they were in charge.
They need someone with testicular fortitude to deport the migrants.
Let them all into the Chunnel and then flood it for a few days.
The purpose for checking on the French side was probably in part to make sure the Chunnel was protected from the greater potential spectrum of threats that might come from the continent, what with its open borders.
I would consider it likely that these were consolidated on the French end both ways as a cost savings measure.
If that was the case the Brits should take a stand on the basis of continued Chunnel security and offer to cooperate with checks at BOTH ends, where inbound, and make this a cooperative measure at both ends (iow: neither is relying fully on the other yet neither loses face).
And they should further also announce a cessation of ANY refugee traffic of any sort via the Chunnel route. The Chunnel is ONLY for daily, normal traffic and no other. Then the Camp awaiting transit to England near Calais has no compelling reason to exist there (the old ferry services having long since ceased for the most part) and the French gain a needed pretext to clean the concentrated nest out and break it up, sending its denizens elsewhere where they will lack numbers presently held.
Send them to Sealand, that’s about halfway between the UK and Calais. Let them rot there.
French looking for somebody else to do the heavy lifting again.
Too complicated. Just deport them to their home countries and shoot them if they resist.
And France used to be England’s ally.
That would be one response if England refused refugees “period”.
Which they should certainly do with respect to Muslims: the only group presently known for engaging in decentralized, or so-called lone wolf, terrorism.
But until they do they give a pretext for those refugee camps to exist that the weasels of Europe will lay hold of make sure they continue to exist.
It would be so simple to just announce there are ZERO handouts for any immigrants. If you stop giving them free stuff, they’ll stop coming.
There are already checks at both ends. Under the Le Touquet agreement, French inbound customs/border checks are at Dover (and St Pancras London for the Eurostar trains.) That’s why the French are officially rather cautious about tearing it up. Incidentally the ferry services are still alive and flourishing.
