Senator Jeff Sessions Refutes Recent Media Reports of Trump Immigration Position Reversal

Following a Hispanic outreach meeting by the Trump campaign numerous media outlets began reporting that Donald Trump was changing his position on immigration, specifically deportation of illegal immigrants. The Trump campaign immediately rebuked the false media reports last night.

Senator Jeff Sessions appeared on Fox News this morning to continue asserting the campaign message that illegal border crossing will be halted, deportation of illegal aliens will be enforced and there is no substantive change to Donald Trump’s immigration position.

The media loves to use the term “deportation force” to manufacture an narrative of a new controversy. However, there is already a federal agency called ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) who routinely arrest and deport illegal aliens. Despite the media protestations to the contrary ‘deportation is not a new concept’, we have been deporting people for decades.

KellyAnne Conway is implying this as well. She said “to be determined” when asked about immigration.

-- KellyAnne Conway is implying this as well. She said "to be determined" when asked about immigration. --

Not aiming to correct you or challenge you. Your post is a good jumping off point to post what was said ...

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRUMP: You're going to have a deportation force. And you're going to do it humanely and inexpensively.
QUESTION: Are they going to be ripped out of their homes?
TRUMP: Can I tell you?
QUESTION: How?
TRUMP: They're going back to where they came. If they came from a certain country, they are going to be brought back to that country. That's the way it's supposed to be.
(END VIDEO CLIP)

BASH: So, does Donald Trump still support that, a deportation force removing the 11 million or so undocumented immigrants?

CONWAY: What he supports -- and if you go back to his convention speech a month ago, Dana, what he supports is to make sure that we enforce the law, that we are respectful of those Americans who are looking for well-paying jobs, and that we are fair and humane for those who live among us in this country.

And, as the weeks unfold, as the weeks unfold, he will lay out the specifics of that plan that he would implement as president of the United States.

BASH: Will that plan include a deportation force, the kind that he just -- you just heard in that sound bite and that he talked about during the Republican primaries?

CONWAY: To be determined.

Here’s a link to the Univision article that started all this:

This article was posted here on FR:

Univision is trying, without success, to stir the pot.

Most welcome. By the way, VERY GOOD insight in Trump campaign manager: A deportation force TBD.

Near the end is a description by Jose Fuentes, the former attorney general of Puerto Rico, who was sitting right across the table from Trump. Fuentes describes in more detail what was said. I don't want to quote too much of the article here ... click on the link. But ...

Fuentes said he didn't know why some walked away with the idea that Trump would change his position on deportations. He wondered whether it was because Trump seemed to place more emphasis on dealing with the issue than he has before -- that he was willing to hear different ideas and consider them.
