speechByron York: Onstage, Trump sheds ego, lays off media, hones new role
Washington Examiner ^ | Aug. 21, 2011 | Byron York

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Back when Donald Trump was giving one hour-plus, free-form, jazz-improvisation speeches — that is, for nearly all of the campaign until the last week — Trump spent an inordinate amount of time telling audiences how great he was. He was the best at this, the best at that, he won this, he won that, his companies were the greatest, people loved him. A typical Trump speech included long stretches of nearly nonstop bragging.

York's not a NeverTrumper but he has been a definite skeptic and critic. This is a very favorable article about the speech Trump gave in Fredricksburg, VA last night. In addition it appears as a "Must Read" on lucianne.com, meaning Trunp's really getting his message to Republican skeptics he needs to win.

Even if Trumps talking if his achievements is characterized as “bragging”, which liberals in their jealousy are known to do, it doesn’t bother me one bit. I love it! It’s encouraging and it gives hope to those of us who are entrepreneurally inclined.

I don’t know whether “long stretches” is accurate, but there did seem to be much more bragging than is usual in political speeches. Or maybe a better way to put it is too much direct bragging, the kind you might hear on a schoolyard.

There is an old saying, “If you can do it, it’s not bragging.”

Yeah, I never heard that and I’ve listened to lots of Trump’s speeches.

It's not bragging.

It's a simple and often minimalist recital of his business record in order to demonstrate he's shown the capabilities needed to fix the country's problems.

If Trump was a braggart he'd be talking about his help with the East Side Rapist, rewarding the bus driver who talked the suicidal lady off the bridge, getting the soldiers on furlough home via the Trump plane etc etc. Trump is a very modest man. Meantime mediocrities like York think they can narrow the accomplishment gap, by belittling Trump's success. Whose camp are you in, Maro? Praying you're not another pettifogging fence sitter, because it's those who've brought us to these straits.

As Trump supporter from the start I was hesitant to see Trump become scripted as I thought the free form stream of conscious shtick was his calling card.

But after seeing this new Trump I wish he started sooner. He’s got the ability to pick things up quick and seems to get better by the day with Teleprompter.

This was his best week by far and even his GOP critics are admitting it by virtue of focusing on Hillary and not hammering Trump 24/7. I think he’s scaring the crap out if the lib media now.

“.. a typical Trump speech included long stretches of nearly nonstop bragging ..”

You can only conclude that, if you get all your information from CNN and MSNBC.

Anyone who has followed Trump from the beginning, listening to each of his speeches, could not honestly write that sentence.

I just noticed what Trump has done to his critics on the right. If they criticize him for this, then they fear they’ll be called racist for not supporting Trump’s outreach to blacks. York has exaggerated Trump’s campaign speeches being only about him bragging.

So when you went on job interviews did you go into detail about your accomplishments within your field of expertise? If you did, were you bragging or selling yourself?

Keep in mind that campaigning is selling yourself to those judging if they want what you are selling. Which of course is yourself to the elected political office you are vying to attain.

Bingo. Something I got from reading his book, "Art of the Deal". He wanted to take over the restoration of the Wollman Ice Skating Rink because he wanted his kids to be able to use the rink and he saw the city was having one failure after another as it brought on construction companies more interested in the contact money than the job itself.

He said in the book that he know nothing about building outdoor ice rinks, but he knew how to find the best people for the job. He'll talk to these people to then come up to speed himself on whatever the topic might be. Basically, he's the definition of a good manager.

Good. I personally like the change in tone and emphasis. No one at this point should doubt that Trump is ready, willing, and able to hand someone their posterior. Now we’re seeing the President Trump on display.

If people get to see, I think they’ll like.

Fredericksburg on Saturday was the fifth speech in a row in which Trump eschewed the long-form winging-it of the past. It began with a national security speech in Ohio, followed by a law-and-order speech in Wisconsin, the I-regret speech in North Carolina, and a Friday night rally in Michigan.

For those who joined me in Fairfield, CT last Saturday night, that was likely the very last "free-wheeling" campaign speech we will ever see Mr. Trump give.

I will never forget that evening now just seven nights ago. It was about 120 degrees inside the building and we stood for hours in that barely ventilated and sweaty gymnasium. Then Donald Trump comes out an hour or so late and gives us 70 minutes of pure unadulterated Trump including of rapping on the dishonest media who are "disgusting human beings" and talking about how they swung their cameras around "like pretzels" when there was a protester (though there were very few that night). It was a raucous, rocking night in which Monica's blue dress was mentioned ("Thank God that dress was found!") and pointing out his security men and commending them for "bouncing that bozo out of here" (one of the 2-3 protesters that were ejected).

Sadly it was the end of an era but I was so glad to be there for it. The very last "pure" Donald Trump stump speech!

I'm thinking the following day (an off day for the campaign) was when Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway took the reins and since then, we've seen "Teleprompter Trump".

But it's not all bad. I think the speeches of the past week have been great and if that's what it takes to win this election, I'm all for it.

But I will always miss the old Donald Trump.

The Washington Examiner is an organ of Bill Kristols National Review. It showed up in my inbox one day and no matter how many times I unsubscribe, it still keeps coming. It is NeverTrump at its worst.
