Backtracking this business at CERN a bit, about 20 years or so ago I attended a conference at UCLA celebrating the 80th birthday of Julian Schwinger. There were a lot of physicists from CERN there. (Met John Bell of QM fame.)
It didn’t take long to observe however, that at least 50% of these guys were not playing with full decks. Frumpy, unmatching clothes, some smelled as if they hadn’t showered in months...at least two characters were running around in un-matched socks (I didn’t check if they were wearing each other’s mate, God help us!).
I think my point is that nutty stuff is going to come sometimes from such a nut-bags to begin with.
