American Apparel is said to be considering moving manufacturing out of California

Struggling retailer American Apparel is eyeing a move out of its downtown Los Angeles manufacturing facility for a lower-wage part of the country, according to two sources familiar with the company.

The Los Angeles clothing maker, which emerged from bankruptcy in February, is contemplating a move to a state such as Tennessee, North Carolina or South Carolina, where the minimum wage is $7.25, said one source, who requested anonymity due to pending litigation. That would be a significant savings once California’s minimum wage climbs to $15 an hour in 2020.

In a statement, American Apparel said it “does not comment on rumors or speculation.”

The lease on its current downtown Los Angeles headquarters, which is also its largest factory, runs out in 2019. The New York Post first reported the news. Another source, who requested anonymity to avoid losing work, said the company plans to keep its headquarters, including its design team, based in L.A.

There’s plenty of vacant textile factories in NC and SC.

But those issues are no excuse to kill the industrial base to prove a point. Fight all those things but do not offshore.

We live in a (somewhat) free-market economy. Most Americans accept this, and this needs to continue. Our firm manufactures pistons and dampers for construction projects. 40% of our business is exports. NY State's over-the-top regs on everything from Obamacare to Workers Comp to union negotiations kill us. We compete against Chinese and Europeans for business overseas. These added burdens don't mean we choose to "save money" by offshoring or not. It means we either get an order - or we don't. If we don't get an order, that work, and those jobs, go to our competitors' workers in other countries.

But the knowledge is long gone. Only immigrants are able and willing to work in commercial garment manufacturing, now - as they do in Los Angeles.

Oh, you didn't really think that "Made in the USA" label meant "Made by Americans", did you? :)

At a minimum an unemployed Freeper needs to know where to go to get a job. Hell I'd like to work for Ford. Where is the listing?

Job listings? May I suggest you start with:
www.monster.com
www.indeed.com
www.dice.com
jobs.yourstate.gov

The fact is that as a group, Blacks are flagrantly over-represented statistically not only in crime, but on Welfare and believe it or not, welfare fraud too. Lets extrapolate some statistics, shall we?
http://m.liveleak.com/view?i=0f2_1407767795

Welfare Statistics
Total number of Americans on welfare 12,800,000
Total number of Americans on food stamps 46,700,000
Total number of Americans on unemployment insurance 5,600,000
Percent of the US population on welfare 4.1 %
Total government spending on welfare annually
(not including food stamps or unemployment) $131.9 billion

Welfare Demographics
Percent of recipients who are white 38.8 %
Percent of recipients who are black 39.8 %
Percent of recipients who are Hispanic 15.7 %
Percent of recipients who are Asian 2.4 %
Percent of recipients who are Other 3.3 %

So if 14.1% of the total population consumes 39.8% of the total Welfare; what percent of that population is ON WELFARE? http://www.statisticbrain.com/welfare-statistics

Welfare might be comfortable, HOWEVER you are actually living in horrible neighborhoods, your life is just an existence not EVER getting better, I believe that MOST people would like to have a better life EVEN if it means they HAVE to get up and go to work!!!

Ford is not seeing a labor shortage anywhere in the USA. That story(fairly tale) you spewed is BS. Nobody has to beg for employees.

I have relatives (I am ashamed to admit) who have lived on welfare for years. They have “gamed” the system to get as much free stuff as possible. For example, in Washington State a woman with custody of 3 kids gets supplements up to $30,375 including utilities, food, housing, clothing, unemployment, work first (cash assistance), Medicaid. So, she finds a friend to live with and gives her “rent”. Then the food is $649/month. She does cash jobs.

Yet, she has money for booze and drugs. Hotels and trips. Her kids seem to dress well and they spend their vacations at theme parks that her siblings who work, cannot afford to go to.

So, call me skeptical. I see too many career folk who do not work, have never worked, and have no intentions of ever working. Meanwhile, I am up every morning at 4:25am, and out the door at 5am for my 90 minute commute. I get home between 4:30-5:30 and have worked since I was 16. I am 56 now and plan on retirement at 70. And the bums just irritate me to no end.

“China makes most things and soon will make everything and take over the world.”

I read the same thing about Japan in the 1980s. Chill.

Some think there is a looming shortage in many occupations:

” is contemplating a move to a state such as Tennessee, North Carolina or South Carolina”

OK, but If they come here to North Carolina, they all have to pee in the proper restrooms and they must not be illegal aliens.

:-)

I know someone just like. I went to school with her. She has two kids. The daughter is just like her, but the son surprisingly is not.
