This is simple. The USOC should tell them if those swimmers aren’t allowed to leave now, there won’t be any Americans at the closing ceremonies.
Looks like now a British athlete says he was robbed as well.
If we had a decent government, they'd backup our athletes, and get them home quick.
“why would they feign being robbed at gunpoint?”
To cover up for being out until daylight in violation of Athlete curfew rules?
For instance, Lochte now says the taxi wasn't pulled over by men with a badge, but that they were robbed after stopping at a gas station, NBC reported. Lochte also now says the assailant pointed a gun at him rather than putting it to his head. They also changed their story from several men (4 or 5) with guns to a single robber with a gun.
The robbery was also not reported to the police nor to the United States Olympic Committee, claiming they were too afraid to report it because they thought they would get in trouble. (In trouble for what? One wouldnt get in trouble for simply reporting a robbery unless there was something more involved); the police only became aware of it via media reports after Lochte and his mother (who was not there) gave media interviews which led to them to being officially questioned, but then later changing parts of their stories in subsequent media reports.
And the police have been as yet unable to identify the cab driver and are asking him to come forward. And if I understand correctly, the swimmers have also given conflicting accounts of what time the robbery took place and what time they left the club and what time they arrived back at the Olympic Village - 4 AM vs 7 AM (claiming they were too drunk to remember all the details). And it has been claimed that the surveillance video from the gas station does not show the men having been there anytime on Sunday.
Then there is the video footage of them returning to the Olympic Village after the alleged robbery, looking very relaxed and smiling, joking around and going through security with what appears to be their wallets and cell phones and wrist watches.
Not sure as to why the conflicting accounts but something doesnt seem right about it. Thats not to say they were not robbed but I question as to why and under what circumstances. A drug deal gone wrong or an attempt to pick up a hooker gone wrong?
Not to defend the Rio police or say that Rio isnt a violent and dangerous city where armed robberies are common and some of the police and officials corrupt, but the authorities are likely on good legal grounds to detain them for further questioning and getting the matter cleared up.
If they lied to the police and gave false statements about what actually happened or if they lied and the robbery didnt happen at all, they could find themselves in some deep water (pun intended).
It is in Brazil. Do not deceive yourselves boys and girls, Brazil is a third world nation masquerading as civilized. I’ve been there, and worked there and I’m not interested in going back. They make up the rules as they go. I have no doubt that this is all trumped up against the swimmers to avoid what Brazil sees as national embarrassment. It is very simple, they are accusing the accuser to cover up the problem. The upshot of this will backfire on them but they do not see it that way. Brazil is largely a mix of Portuguese / Latin and Aboriginal attitudes. The state house is half civilized and half just barely literate jungle savage and filled with ignorance and emotion.
You'd probably win that bet. I'm just trying to toss out something to salvage the situation. Watching this has been heartbreaking for me. I have people I call family (friends) down there, they were already suffering under their horrendous government corruption and collapsing economy, but after this it can only get worse.
....or grease the Constables palm with a few C notes.
Absolutely. I've been through it. I didn't wear anything of value whatsoever. Shirt, shorts and chinelas (flip flops.) I've been 4 times for partying and had a great time, but now that is years and years ago. It's all very sad to hear it could possibly get worse. I warned my friends again and again about Lula and Dilma but now they are seeing where it has brought them and they are horrified at the destruction socialist policy has wrought on their nation.
Kind of heavy handed. That being said I think there is something screwy about their story. Seems one of the guys told his mom, and she told the media about it. That is how the story broke.
Wow. If they lied, why??? That is stupid.
FWIW, I am not saying that they lied about being robbed, but there appears to be multiple inconsistencies in their accounts of what happened that need to be cleared up.
Wow!
If our president had any balls the Marines would already be there and some government buildings would be smoking ash heaps with bodies under them.
Well Skerry will bring James Taylor along with him if they want..
^^ THAT ^^
If they won’t take Hellary, then trade the swimmers for Kerry. He knows about turd world countries, he’s been to Vietnam, ya know.
Brazil wouldn’t so much as think about detaining them if Trump were in charge.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
constables are prolly holding out for a pallet of unmarked bills to be flown in before they release any athletes?
Wow! What’s going on???
I remember a time on Wall Street when having "MBA" after your name meant you had approved loans to Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Only problem with those loans was that although the interest rate was nice and high, the countries couldn't repay them.
